Here's how Stevie did it, according to http://www.legendarytones.com

This is from a very nice review at that website:

"I found the reissue TS-9 has a nice soft-clipping distortion effect that is pleasant for adding extra sustain and drive. By turning the volume on full and the drive at a minimum setting, the TS-9 is also well suited to be used as a clean boost effect. This, incidentally is also how legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan tended to use his Tube Screamer."

I've tried that setting with stock TS-9's and I liked it better than lots of drive and less level and better than drive and level about equal and 1/2 way up.

Just been playing around with the TS-9's I got back from John (STRATDELUXER 97) and trying to find the new sweet spot for my style...

I don't use my Tubescreamer much, but my cousin uses two in front of his Super Reverb. One is used just for a clean boost and the other is used for overdrive.

Re: SRV fans: how do you set your TS-9?

I use a TS9 in front of a 69 Super Reverb (silverface). I have the volume on the Amp set at about 4, which keeps the Amp relativley clean. I have the Ts9 set at about 40% on the gain, about 60% on the tone, and I have the volume set at about 75%. I will try some of the other settings SRV used and see If I like Em

Re: SRV fans: how do you set your TS-9?

I've always used them with the level all the way up and the drive around 9-10 o'clock.

Lew....Your TS9s are modded to actually give you a cleaner tone at lower drive settings from your stock TS9...Your sweet spot for boosting isn't going to be the same as the unmodded pedals...

Yep...that's what I'm learning. Thanks! Lew

Re: SRV fans: how do you set your TS-9?

when i use one i run the gain at about 11 o'clock, tone around 12 and volume around 2 o'clock, maybe a little higher depending on the amp/guitar combo

Hi Jeremy, That's about the way most people seem to use them. Me too until I learned about the SRV's setting.

I've got my Tele with the Jerry Donahue pickup plugged into both TS-9's and straight into my Deluxe Reverb on about 4.

Both TS-9's "ON" is a cool tone but a little over the top and I've been just comparing them to each other one at a time.

I have the level dimed on both of them and the tone at about 11 to 1 oclock, just depending.

Then I bring up the drive to about 9 or 10 oclock...and maybe bring down the level a little if needed.

Even with these modded TS-9's, that's, roughly, my favorite setting.

It's like a clean boost but gives ton's of sustain and allows pinch harmonics to really take off.

And there's a nice low mids/upper bass resonance that I really like and which allows me to up pick and squeeze of notes on the low E string...especially with the Jerry Donahue pickup.

John did a great job on these pedals... :) ...I go back and forth on which one I like better.

Just when I think #1 is the only way to go, I like find a sweet setting for #2 and really appreciate its thicker, beefier tone!

Lew.....I'm ok with your feelings, just as long as both pedals sound good modded...I'll let you decide which one you sleep with from there!

The best tone I ever got from a Tubescreamer was when I set it up the way I just described and plugged it into the Vox AC30 I had with Celestion Alnico Blues. Sounded like Eric Johnson's violin tone...but just way to loud.

With these modded pedals, I can get alot of that same quality through my Deluxe Reverb, tho it's not quite as sweet as the AC 30.

But I do like the level almost all the way up, the drive about 1/4 to a 1/3 way up and tone about 1/2 way...that's kind of the way I've used a TS-9 for awhile now.

The modded ones sound good to me that way too...especially #2, the bassier and thicker sounding one.

Lew...Your pedals were set up a bit the other way,in that I wasn't going for alot of lows and lots more gain....You'd love my TS5 mod....Smooth,warm,singing tone, lots of sustain, with a very rolled off highend(bordering dark).....Ask Midnite Man about the one I did for him..When I Mod my own Tube Screamers I'm always wanting more gain at max settings and more lowend balls...When I step on any of my Tube Screamers I want to hear and feel some lowend and not thin anemic stuff....One thing most TS lack is this lowend when you step on the pedal...

Lew....I sent you some other chips to try,but you'll probably like the RC4558P in your cleaner pedal...The JRC4558D will give you more gain, will be slightly darker in tone but does the singing EJ tone better than the RC4558P chip...Why not try the JRC4558D chip in your number 2 pedal and compare it to your number 1? A chip will make a difference you will hear..

Forgot to mention that 1 of the JRC4558D chips is stored in #1's battery compartment...The other chips were with your returned old parts...Check out the chips and see if that changes a pedal a bit differently for you before sending another TS9 to me for mods?

Re: SRV fans: how do you set your TS-9?

can one mod a smash box for a more smoother, rounded off tone?

LOL nevermind then .. it's got a pretty smooth tome by itself, but i'd like it a bit darker.. maybe more compressed also

If you were to happen upon a schematic I could then say yes to your question buddy...I've just not messed with one "yet"...

Re: SRV fans: how do you set your TS-9?

umf.. well... yah .. >.<
would a picture help? prolly not cos you need all the values and everything detailed down so you see what does what.. i'll try to get my hands on one.. then you can just PM me with what you think would work, i can do the moding stuff myself =)

We can try that but it would be pretty hard for me to voice the pedal without actually hearing the changes we made to it....We can try though? The schematic doesn't normally associate where the parts are on your board so I'd have no way of knowing where the components are on your board without being able to physically trace it....Follow me buddy?

Re: SRV fans: how do you set your TS-9?

yep, i know what you mean..
it'd be a lot of trial and error
you: ok, now find the 3M ohm resistor.. got it?
me: i think so
you: ok, exchange it for a 5M ohm resistor and let rip
me: allrighty.. *5 minutes later*.. ok man, you're the greatest! not only it screams now, but it added neat black smoke effects to it.. oh wait.. aaack, my foot's on fire! it buuuurns!!

LOL

yea.. i had those problems in school. trying to find the right components on the board from a schematic.. which turned out to be an amp schem and i was doing a regulator >.<
