SS SUNN COMBO

I'm looking at a older Sunn Beta Lead 100watt Combo Solid State Amp..but know nothing about solid state amps. Any SUNN Fans out there to
give me more insight about it! In the past,Sunn was very expensive, and from what I've been told, are still in demand.
So..hows the Sunn Beta Lead Guitar Amp?
Thanks

Re: SS SUNN COMBO

I think they are pretty cool for SS. I have the predessor of the Beta Lead, the Solos II. Gigged with it for many years, very reliable, excellent cabinetry. I used a mild clean boost to warm it up. Actually the tone on mine is closer to a Marshall JCM 800 tone than a Fender tone, which always surprises people until they hear it next to the Marshall.

Yes, expensive. When I bought my new Solos in 1972, list was $50 more than a Fender Twin Reverb.

Give it a try.

Re: SS SUNN COMBO

I've owned a Sunn beta lead twice, and they are very cool amps. Basically, they're one of the best sounding SS amps I've ever used. They are complicated internally, I never liked working on them, but they are at least built well. Oh, and they are insanely loud. I think the lack of squish really contributes to their crushing tone.

Dude, Sunn made some kickass tube gear. I have lusted hard over a Sunn Model T (the older one, but even the Fender one would do). But, I know of one band that uses Sunn solid state stuff.

Re: SS SUNN COMBO

I like the model T too, BUT NOT AT THOSE OBSCENE HIPSTER PRICES! I listen to Red Fang's new album on spotify a lot, cheers :beerchug:

Re: SS SUNN COMBO

I have actually been contemplating on switching over to SS amplification less stuff to worry about and a lot easier to move around. I have never heard of Sunn though are they better then some of the Randall SS offerings?

Re: SS SUNN COMBO

Love the old Sunn SS stuff. Along with the PV Standards of the same era, they are the best sounding SS amps made IMO. You can fool the tube folks, you open up the volume and they will grind. This is a demo of my old Solos II, that I put through the paces. I also have an ugly old Sunn PA SS that grinds beautifully. Oh and my Model T, the meanest amp ever made!

Re: SS SUNN COMBO

Used to gig with a Beta Lead head and 4X12 cab back in the 80's, to me it did sound like a solid-state Marshall but a little less brittle around the edges.
