SSL-1 for a strat

Re: SSL-1 for a strat

I have a MIM Strat with a maple neck w/ the ssl-1's in the neck and middle and love them. They are just all around great pick ups. For a long time I had it in the bridge but I scored a Little 59 so I'm trying that out right now. The single coils will improve your tone a lot from the original pick ups.

Re: SSL-1 for a strat

hey guys,

thanks for all the replies, no i know i'm going the right direction.
now regarding the middle pickup should i really go for the rw or it doesn't make a lot of difference?
regarding the ssl-5 for the bridge ,i only find left-hand pickup (ssl-5l), is this the standard ssl-5 ?

can you recommend a decent on-line store i can by the 1's & 5's not as a set?

thanks!
rude mood.

If you want to buy them new then i would recommend wymore guitars. he is a forum bro here and always has great prices.

Re: SSL-1 for a strat

The stock MIM pickups are not terrible IMO, but not great. I highly recommend replacing them with the SSL-1's if you want the traditional Strat tone, but be warned that you will notice a slight drop in output from the stock pickups. The stock ceramic pickups are actually fairly hot as far as single coils go.

Definitely do not let this discourage you from doing the swap though. It is well worth it. Just wanted to give you a heads-up so there were no surprises.

Re: SSL-1 for a strat

All good stuff here. For MY tastes, I do believe an alnico 5 pup in the neck is essential for that great neck and neck/mid tone. I've used SSL-1s, APS-2, Antiquity Tex Hots (A2 magnets). Currently I have the Antiquities in all 3 positions.

I do miss the A5 neck quite a bit, but the A2 bridge is glorious! Nice and strong, with confident highs, but not too much. These, and the aps-2's are a bit rounder and warmer, which is great, but when you want that really really clean crisp strat sound-an A5 mag is the way to go and the ssl-1's are the best value on the block. They'll give any boutique pup a serious run for their money.

So, ssl-1 neck, mid(rw/rp) with an aps-2 bridge-that's what I'd recommend.

Wymore guitars is a great place to get them!:14:
