SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

SSL-1 in the bridge would be great with fender 57/62s for a vintage but budget-minded vintage strat. I actually might do that...

SSL-1s are nice in the bridge. those mids work in that position.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

SSL-1 is by far the best vintage Strat pickup on the market. period.
If your looking to get accurate vintage tone, your wasting money and chasing your tail if you get anything (ANYTHING- and I know about all the boutique winders..although there are some solid pickup winders like Zhang who make a fine product)) but the SSL-1/2 is THE Ne Plus Ultra of old Strat tone, and the best part is, its very reasonably priced..

Ill give you this, When you shovel it you use both hands. :fing2:

SMARK.....you are not the smark from the fender forum by any chance?
If so, its great to have you here!

Try removing the wooden block. If you need block get a trem blocker (the little metal part). The move you move towards a hardtail the boomier the neck pickup becomes.

What pickup did you have there before that wasn't boomy?

i have a long body socket in there now, stainless steel. works very well. do you think removing it will make a difference?

i have had fender fat 50, dimarzio paf, and air classic in the neck.

my ears are really sensitive to mids. they really stand out to me in just about every set up i have ever had, and thats a lot of different guitars and amps.

i am gonna start looking for a better amp as soon as i can afford it. but for now i have to make the best use of what i have.

Thanx. As you can see, I've been a member here for quite awhile. I just don't post very often. Mostly because I am more of a single coil guy and the vast majority of postings here are humbucker related. So I come here more to learn than anything else.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

The ssl1 shouldn't sound darker than a fender vintage style pickup.

Screwed up wiring?

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

I'm gonna chime in because I had that very pickup in my Deluxe Strat which has SCNs in it. I could not tell it apart from the SCNs and I believe they have the exact dc resistance (I know dc resistance does not indicate ~ yadda yadda).
Anyway, SCNs are not known for their chime either. My suggestion is if you want Fender chime, achieve it with Fender pups - with one exception of course !

Do you still have the Fat 50 ? How did it sound ?
What do you have exactly - SSS HSS HSH ???

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

got rid of the fat 50's a while back. they are great, but they have lots of mids. i currently have a twangbanger in the bridge and the ssl-1 in the middle, 250k volume pot only. i am starting to warm up to the ssl after height adjustments and eq adjustments on my amp.

i think the next pickups i try will be from D. Allen. also need a better amp.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

I'm thinking my next pup project will be building a loaded strat pick guard, with D.Allen StratCats !

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

no, the fat 50's are not noiseless.

Crane, the Strat Cats are the ones i like too, as well as his '54s

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

BTW...

While I did sell my SSL sets, I kept my Antiquity Surfers. They have a lot more jangle and quack than I could get with the SSL set, yet they also handle distortion very well. They are certainly not for the budget-minded guitarist but they would likely suit you much better.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

yeah, i thought that too. maybe when i am done with school and hopefully making good money, i can splurge for top shelf gear.

again, the ssl isn't a bad pickup, just "warmer" than i expected.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

im pretty sure Smark will testify to this....if anyone ever goes on the fender forum, hes like the inhouse guru on strat pickups....kinda like how blueman and kojak are the magnet swap gurus here, aceman is the class clown and jerry is the village idiot.

Anyway.....

Fender CS54s give you maximum chime.

...
personally i really like ssl1s but im mostly play jazz so i like my pups a little bit fat. I always lean towards a nice round ass rather than a skinny willow.

Re: SSL-1 sounds fuller than i expected.

well becasue you havbe never real;ly played an old 60's or 60'strat.
Most winders wind this artificial galss and mid scopped chime inot theior pickups.
If youve got a gerat Strat the SSL-1 is the real deal. Period.
Its about the only pickup that actually sounds very really like an old Strat pickup in a good modern Strat im my estimation.

I would really mostly agree with this. I have owned a 56, 59 and a 64 Strat in the distant past. After years of runnng the gamut of boutique p/u's in various other Strats, searching for the tone of my old, and now gone, Strats, an old set of SSL-1's laying around my basement did the trick. I was kind of shocked, actually. They just sound the closest to me.

Vintage Strat pickups, particuarly from the 50's, have a very Woody tone. Like a stout twang. Not too much in the way of glassieness. The SSL-1's do that mid thing better than any others I've tried. The Alnico V magnets help alot.

I can not understood why boutique winders (and SD for that matter) sometimes use Alnico II, III, etc. in their "vintage" wind p/u's, as the preponderance of old Strat pickups were Alnico V. The others are too much of one thing or not enough of another to relly nail "old" Strat tones.

YMMV
