SSL-1 vs Antiquities

Re: SSL-1 vs Antiquities

You might pay extra for the +/-10% better tone of an Ant. vs. an SSL-1/2,
, however with a premium guitar, its something you may well want to take advantage of as presenting excellent value for the extra cost involved. Not that a lesser value instrument could not benefit from Ants, casue I'm sure it could, but you'll really be in the major leagues with Ants and a high quality guitar.
Just my 'pinion ya unnerstan....

Not played the Ants, but the SSL-1's are a defining strat pickup. I have two in my stray, but with an SSL-6 bridge.

Re: SSL-1 vs Antiquities

The ant's have slightly 'deeper' tone than the ssl1. If you want 'the' strat pickup then ant's are the way to go, however for a lot of people (John Frusciante included) the ssl1's are quite good enough.....mind you he's got a '63 strat to stick them in.

Re: SSL-1 vs Antiquities

An ssl-1 set is about $90 less than the antiquities, and they still sound fantastic, and the SSL-1 set does still have aged (but not relic'd) magnets. The SSL-1s I say have the bang for the buck, as they are just great, great pickups for the price.
I haven't played the Antiquities, so I can't directly compare the value/$

Re: SSL-1 vs Antiquities

Value is subjective. As MetalManiac suggests, the Law Of Diminishing Returns applies. There is no directly proportional correlation between retail prices and outright sonic quality.

I am yet to hear a bad Antiquity model pickup; just examples that did not suit the guitar on which they were tried.

Re: SSL-1 vs Antiquities

As far as bang for the buck goes it's tough to beat the SSL1s. They are simply great vintage strat pickups. I've owned them, and loved them.
I currently have the Ant (Surfer) set in my Am Dlx strat, they set me back a pretty penny, but they are simply the best strat pickups I've ever played.
So my verdict, yes the Ants are better, are they THAT much better to justify the cost for most players, probably not.
If you're looking for the best, and don't mind spending serious money for them Ants are the way to go. If not, go with the SSL1s and rock out without any feeling of buyers remorse.
