SSL-5 and SSL-6 in Strat Neck?

How do these pickups sound in the Start neck position with that higher output? I see Duncan makes a calibrated set. They are supposed to be a great Vintage style sounding pickup for Texas Blues rock sound, but Im just wondering about a high output Start pickup for the neck and what it would be like.

I didn't realise the strat customs were calibrated. I can't find this info on Duncan's site. Where did you read that?

From the website.....

Custom Staggered SSL-5
complete setup
Calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup. Many players use an SSL-5 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-1's, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility.

Custom Flat SSL-6
complete setup
Calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup. Many players use an SSL-6 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-2's, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility.

I made sure with my 1st order, the ssl-6, and again with the ssl-5 a few days ago that I was getting the 'bridge' pickup, but there is no 'bridge' pickup. Call Duncan. They are like the quarter pounders meaning no special wind for bridge compared to neck/middle. You can't order an ssl-5b or ssl-6b. I tried. The site is confusing. They must mean calibrated with the middle being RW/RP. That also must me why they suggest ssl-1s and 2s for neck and middle "for tonal versatility".

The SSL-6's have a great "beefy" girth to them, but they do sacrifice a bit of the classic chime that Strat singles are known for. And it is killer for blues and rock. I love it, myself.

I tried the Custom in the neck of my strat but felt it was just too hot. It was overbearing and lumbered around. I think it'd be great in the bridge though. I had the same experience with the QP- too huge in the neck but sounded pretty nice in the bridge. I like my neck pickups to be my super sensitive delicate pups though, and throw down my rock in the bridge so that probably affects my opinion. However, I did not have the tapped versions of either of the pups- which I think would have made a lot of difference. I've had better success with texas blues tone from the APS and SSL singles.
