SSL-5 in Neck Position

I have a 2005 American Strat. I just bought a SSL-5 to put in the neck of my guitar. All the reviews I have read about this pickup has it in the bridge position. I already have a SHR-1 hot rails in the bridge and I love it. I was hoping to get kind of a fuller "SRV" tone with the SSL-5 in the neck.

Does anyone have this pickup in the neck, or do you think it will get me the tone I'm looking for?? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks!!!

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

welcome to the forum!!

ive tried it in the neck and it might work fine with a hot rails in the bridge. typically its is a little dark and too hot to match up with most bridge pups but i doubt that will be the case in your situation. it sounds like a beefy single coil strat pup so compared to your hot rails it will be much more srv like

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

I have it in the neck of my strat, I absolutely love it... it has a big full sound, sounds creamy with the fuzz especially... if you roll it back to about 6 on the volume, it still nails that vintage ssl-1 tone as well. I will probably never change this pickup out of this guitar... it is tone heaven for me...

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

How would a pair of SSL-5's balance in the neck and mid when paired with a PATB-1b?

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

I love it in the neck. If you use 9's or 10's it's a great neck pickup. If you were to go SRV style and play 13's, you would find that you didn't need that extra power. The power would come from the strings, and you could use an SSL-1 or Antiquities. But the SSL-5 in the neck is definitely one of my favorite, expecially in H/S/S guitars, which is kind of what you have.

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

hi was reading through this old post
does any of you guys have a clip of the
SSL-5 in the neck position of a strat?

type sounds. so want to make sure i
choose the right one

so SSL-5 or SSL-1?

any clips of the SSL-5 would be Great
if possible please

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

I thought that the SSL5 in the neck was pretty midrangey, to the point of being a tad muddy and dull...

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

I have a Parts'oStrat that has one at the neck and middle positions with a quarter Pound at the bridge. I use 11's, and I have no complaints about the sounds I get from it.

Re: SSL-5 in Neck Position

srv and mayer both had pups more like the ssl1 than the ssl5

+1 on this point.

I had a strat setup with an SSL3 in the bridge and the SSL5s in the M and N, and while it was hot, loud, and fat sounding, it didn't really sound like a strat at all.

SSL5 in the bridge and SSL1s in the N and M, that's a great combo.

I bet that with some tweaking, you could get the Hot Rails to jive with some SSL1s too...
