SSL-5 love

I have a new (to me) Strat, and for this one I wanted to go for a pretty traditional single coil tone. That said, I've never really cared for the tone of a vintage single coil in the bridge of a Strat (too spiky), so I decided the SSL-5 Custom Staggered was a good compromise.

I bought one off a forum dude, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was a tapped version. I wired it up to a push-pull that puts it in tapped mode, and installed it with a pair of SSL-1's in the neck and middle - same as Gilmour's black Strat (I learned this after the fact ... kind of a happy coincidence as I'm a big DG fan).

I brought the Strat to rehearsal on Sunday along with my Warmoth LP. My thinking was that for the heavier songs I'd need to switch to the LP, because my prejudice was that a single coil can't possibly sound heavy enough.

Wrong! I played the Strat with the SSL-5 the whole five hour rehearsal, and loved it. I might have missed a wee bit of girth on the really heavy riffs, but that pickup has plenty of midrange power and enough highs to cut through when needed. It managed to sound big and powerful while retaining a lot of Stratty bite and snap.

In tapped mode it's very close to a vintage single coil. The bridge/middle position with the tap gives that beautiful Clapton and early Dire Straits tone. With the full power bridge and middle I got a very thick and chewy tone.

Conclusion: the SSL-5 is awesome. Not that this was a big mystery or anything. If you want Strat bridge tone with a bit more power and thickness, this is your first and last choice. Five stars!

Re: SSL-5 love

One thing I hate about the majority of single coils are that they sound clanky, ragged and noisy at high volumes and high distortion levels. However the SSL-5 is strong, clear and slightly compressed, which allows it to cut through at high volumes and high distortion levels. It also doesn't seem to sacrifice sensitivity and expressiveness in favor of power.

And if you want one that kicks your strat in the ballz whilst still sounding like a single coil (albeit darn near P90 thick), then the SSL-3 is the ticket. Just threw one in my strat with a couple CS69's and holy smokes.

Re: SSL-5 love

SSL5's are my Duncan of choice if I want a BIG strat tone.

Re: SSL-5 love

Love the SSL-5 in the bridge, but right now I have it in the middle with an SSL-3 in the bridge and A2 pro in the neck. Sounds great.

Re: SSL-5 love

The first pickup upgrade I ever did was to install 4 (yes 4) SSL-5's in a Strat Ultra. There were 2 RWWP wired in series at the bridge. Did you say "FATTY FAT FATNESS"? You probably do lose the authentic/vintage strat tones, but a tapped version would take care of that.

Re: SSL-5 love

I've got a pickguard out in the shop loaded with SSL_% neck and mid with a SSL-3 at the bridge.
Now all I have to do is make antoher body.

Bumping old thread; I want to hear how this turns out as I'm curious how the neck/mid SSL-5s sound with the SSL-3 bridge.

Re: SSL-5 love

I'm an SSL-6 user. Flat poles for modern radiuses is genius!!!11 Thick, with enough bite. Mine's in the bridge. Love this thing.

Re: SSL-5 love

I put an SSL-5 in an Edwards relic strat that came loaded with SSL-1's. I put the 5 in the bridge....love it!

Re: SSL-5 love

Here is a SSL-6T in a Squier Strat.
A hair too dark for me when switching clean to the SSL-1 in the Middle slot. The tapped sound is a bit too weak. The pup has 13k with 43 AWG and the tap is around 6.5k. With the 43 AWG it should be about 11k and the tap around 9k IMO to get a good match.

Re: SSL-5 love

I have my SSL-6 cranked a good bit lower than fender's recommendation for hot pickups, and I usually just switch from neck to bridge and leave 2-4 out of the equation. I get a great balance in output.

Re: SSL-5 love

would you guys wire the ssl-5 in the bridge with a tone control on it? i do that with vintage output single coils but it might remove all the stratyness out of the ssl-5. what do you think?
