SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

I have a Japan '62 reissue Strat. I am am mostly a humbucker player, (Gibsons and Gretsches) I do enjoy my P90 guitars, too. I recently modified my Telecaster with a Antiquity Firebird Neck and Hot for Tele STL-2. I just find the Strat tones bright for my tastes I am looking to make a possible change.

How would an SSL-5 match with Texas Hot Antiquity I neck and middle. How would the SSL-5 compare to say the Texas Hot Custom bridge? I am looking for more mid content like my Hot for Tele and a bit fatter sound than traditional Strat bridge.

Thanks,
Jack

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

I really like the SSL-5 and 6's for the bridge with say a set of SSL-1's or Alnico II pros. Should also work well with the Hot Texas set to give you some meat but still keep some quack.

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

the antiquity I custom bridge is a little warmer and chewier than the ssl5. both are great strat bridge pups that still retain some great single coil tone

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

I guess I am looking for something less glassy. If there was something equal to the Hot for Tele in the Strat line, that is what I want.

ummm... like the hot for strat? ssl3

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

I use the SSL5 in one of my strats....Great pickup! Beefier pickup, more mids, slightly less bell like, but not overly dark...Full sounding and still a pretty clear sounding bridge pickup.

Take a look at the Hot Stack Plus.

I dropped one into the bridge of one of my strats and really like it.

Its meaty and has more mids than a traditional strat pickup.

LOL - Not sure how I missed that one!!! From the sound samples, it sound like what I am after.

Can anyone describe how an SSL-3 would match with Antiquity I Texas Hots Neck and Middle?? Will the SSL-3 overpower them. Will it kill all the quack in the bridge/middle setting?

How would the maybe with the tap option bringing down to 8.8, that would probably get me the quack for the notch and full sounding bridge position.

Comments?

You should be able to adjust the heights of the pickups and get the balance you need...The quack factor won't be like what it could be with say a pairing of SSL 1s,but I Know Curly likes the SSL 3...I'm sure he could be a great advisor for you..Oddly enough, out of the many sc Duncans I've tryed,I've never tryed the SSL 3.Anytime you go after a hotter wound pickup, you risk losing the jangly highs and it changes the "quack" factor, because the mids and the eq of the pickup(s) change.

I would have never chosen a Hot for Tele in a million years. I used Antiquities, Jerry Donahue and a few others, (Fenders, etc). I borrowed my buddies Tele and he had the Hot for Tele bridge and neck. That bridge PU still sounded like a Tele, (not like an Antiquity), but still retained the Tele sound. But it overdrives great and allows me to play a wide range of music.

Since I am not a Strat guy, I thought I wanted one "traditional" Strat, but everytime I play out with it, I am turning down the tone control, and turning up the bass and mids on my amp. I felt like the standard Strat sound is not for me. I think I will try the SSL-3. I am going to keep reading in the forum. So many choices....sheesh!!!

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

It seems like you have no interest in keeping "the strat sound".

If this is the case than I would check out the QP.

The QP or the SSL-3 should do the trick.

Like I said in my post, take a look at the Hot Stack Plus.

Its has the same wind as a SSL-3 but in a noiseless version.

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

i would get the ssl3t, the tapped version and set it to auto tap in the notch position. youll get a decent notch tone and a nice throaty bridge tone

Will do. I think I still have a Stew Mac super switch that does a bridge coil tap in the notch postion and then switches to full power for bridge position. No push pull pots needed.

Will try out the SSL-3 and go from there.

Thanks guys!!

Re: SSL-5 vs Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom

I got an SSL-3 and assumed it was the tapped version, it was not. I installed it anyway and really like it. It overdrives perfectly, nice warm, fat but it still cuts very nicely. It is mid rangy, but I was prepared for that trade off. (Custom Custom is my favorite bridge humbucker). It pairs nicely with my Antiquities and get enough quack from the bridge/middle. It also sounds great with my push pull pot for neck/bridge Tele sounds. Thanks for the suggestion!!!
