SSL-5 vs Quarter Pound

Hi bros,

Got myself settled on a Screamin Demon for my Kramer Pacer (Alder body - maple neck/rosewood fretboard)

It has APS-1's in the neck and middle, and they sound good but lack beef, and output. They seem too clean compared to the JB that is there now.

I know the SD has lower output, but I want to try something different in the neck. Think the single coil tones of Warren DeMartini (Way Cool Jr) or George Lynch on the Beast From The East album - thick, fluid single coil, but still retains that character.

I have pretty much boiled it down to either the Quarter Pound or the SSL-5.

What would suit my needs more? I want the pickups to be balanced :)

Thanks,

Re: SSL-5 vs Quarter Pound

I would go with the SSL5. I like the QP but I have never been completely happy with them with either 250K or 500K pots. 250K is too dark and 500K is a bit bright. The SSL5 is great because it is beefy and smooth under high gain without sounding stuffy or dark like a lot of hot single coils.

What about pots in the 350K or so region?

Re: SSL-5 vs Quarter Pound

I like the qp in the bridge just fine but never love it in the neck. the ssl5 can be a cool neck pup and I prefer 500k pots

Re: SSL-5 vs Quarter Pound

I'm having a reverse wound SSL-5 put in the middle position of my new Jem.

The bridge will be a distortion and the neck will be a pearly gates.

I have a Quarter Pounder in the middle of my other Jem and I just don't get those funky in between sounds, so I'm going to try this one.

Re: SSL-5 vs Quarter Pound

The QP is double heavy. First the big magnets, then the awg43 wind, and a pretty fat one at that.

I would take one step at a time, especially in the neck.
