SSL-6 is the bomb. AGAIN.

I bought an SSL-6 on the cheap from wymore guitars before they closed, with a "it'll probably work out OK" kind of attitude.
Threw it in a MIM strat. Turns out the whole guitar had too much for me in the upper mids so I yanked the pickup and sold the guitar.
Threw it in my yamaha EG112 pickup-test-bed guitar, in the neck. Thick.

Got bored tonight and stuck it in the bridge of my new ash-bodied Am. Std. WAY NICE. It's got plenty of bass but a smooth, even midrange, and the highs are airy. On the first few licks, I thought I was playing a broadcaster-style pickup. No joke.

I'm back to being an SSL-5/6 enthusiast!

I gotta mess with the height and the volume balance to get it to not make the fender singles seem so weak. The character of the fender middle and neck are good, but damn, switching to the bridge while going into an OD pedal is like... kicking on another OD pedal!

Re: SSL-6 is the bomb. AGAIN.

Yeah, I had a "6" back when I was swapping out pups just to try new things. It was a great pup with lots of beef. I may get another, but I'd like to try the STK-S6 first.

Re: SSL-6 is the bomb. AGAIN.

I have the SSL5 in the bridge of one strat with a pair of CS69's in the neck and middle.

I just picked up an SSL6 for the neck of another alder fat strat that's going to be JB2/SSL1/SSL6 with 500k pots. We'll see how that turns out later (still ahve to order up a Warmoth neck for it).

do you like the way the ssl-5 balances with the '69s? I was thinking of 57/62s in the N and M, which are somewhat similar to '69s.

Re: SSL-6 is the bomb. AGAIN.

I have an Atomic with a full size JB and two SSL6s, and I love those SSL6s. My last fiddle was an early '80s Strat, and I had an SSL6 in the bridge with two SSL2s in the neck and middle, and that was a nice combination as well.
