SSL1 and SSL5

Hello. First post.

I have a lefty strat squire and Im trying to get a better sound (without buying a real strat) so Im planning to get a couple of SD pups (ssl1 and ssl5). I just want to hear some opinions.
Would it be a good idea to put the ssl1 in the bridge position and the ssl5 in the neck? Or the other way?
Should I get a left handded pup or should I just flip them?

I would put the 5 in the bridge, because it is a thicker sounding pup with less highs.

The combo of ssl-1's in the mid and neck with a 5 in the bridge is a very good combo for vintage Strat tones and adding a little beef to the bridge.

I can't say. :dunno: If you get an ssl-6, it is the same wind as a 5 except that it is a "flat" style pup without staggered magnets....if I am not mistaken.

The funny thing about the SSL-5, though, is that it's flippable. It's got an oval baseplate, not a triangular one, so every "righty" SSL-5 can be a lefty and vice-versa.

If it were me, I would get the righty one, and I would install it the righty way, because that's the Hendrix stagger. If you have a lefty guitar fitted with righty magnet staggers, you essentially get a weaker A string and a stronger B string. But if you want the traditional strat tone that everyone else got (non-hendrix) then get the Left Handed Stagger.

Hendrix tone vs everyone else ... thats a tough call :eyecrazy:

For what Ive heard on the SD webpage demos the ssl1 has a crispier sound and the ssl5 would be fatter.

Despite the good advice I believe Im going to place the SSL-5 on the neck and the SSL-1 on the bridge to emphasize their individual properties. Both lefty staggers. :fingersx:

Now I have to think for the middle. I dont play it much by itself, but still ...
need those squire pups gone.

do what you want to do

however, neck pickups are warmer/ stronger by nature because of the larger string travel in that position.
(if you had 3 pickups wound the same, the one in the neck would sound louder, all things being equal.)

that is why some of us recommend stronger pickups in the bridge position -- it's weaker by nature of the position

this is partly why super strats have humbuckers in the bridge ;)

Maybe I should go with the expert advice.
As you can see Im quite doubtful. Well I guess its part of the process.

you'll get some beautiful sounds with the SSL-1 in the neck, and a great Strat Quack tone (Lynyrd Skynyrd's picking sound on Sweet Home Alabama, for one) if you get a good Strat-style middle pickup.

You mean a fender pup?

I already ordered the SSL-1 for the neck. :naughty:

It hard to find leftys versions on the same shop.

Just wanted to update this post years later. I completed my SSL1-SSL1-SSL5 (all leftys), also changed the trem block and electronics in my lefty Squire and it plays wonderful. Cleans on the neck/mid are beautiful and overdriven leads on the bridge stand out with great power and definition! I also put in a grease bucket for the bridge tone and it rocks.

Thanks to all for the advice. I highly recommend this combo.
