SSS advice...

So I bought this used Squire Classic Vibe 50's the other day. Planned to use it as a guitar to pick up on those occasions when I like some bluesy, stratty stuff.
However, it plays so nice that it will get lots of playing time. So i decided to upgrade it's weaker parts. New tremblock and new pickups.

I want a medium/high bridge SC for rock rhythm. The neck should also be medium/high powered to cope with fluid, creamy solos.
In the middle though I want a more vintage oriented SC, Think Hendrix, SRV...
A big plus if position 2 and 4 can quack a little...
I would like to go noiseless since I spend a lot of time recording in my home studio.
I've been eyeing the Injector set from DM, but i'm also curious about the YJM Fury set.
Appreciate any opinions, other pickup suggestions are also welcome!

Re: SSS advice...

I was about the suggest the Injector set with the area pickup that Gilbert has in the middle. They are said to have very good singlecoil sounds althought they are stacks. And they have to extra power ont he neck and bridge pups should you need it.

YJM set is a little bit different. It will get you the more vintage sounds with a modern twist but they are not very powerful. You definitely want more powerful bridge pup. But if you want to be patriotic and YJM is your thing then go for it. They are very good pickups if you like that sort of thing.

From SD you could also consider the Quarter pound set if you're willing to loose the humcancelling. They are very potent pickups but they would hum.

From DMZ also some sort of Virtual set. Like Virtual Solo in the bridge, VIrtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 in the neck and Virtual Vintage 54Pro or Blues in the middle. Also SD Stack Plus's set should be great also.

Re: SSS advice...

Thanks guys, appreciated!
I love Yngwies tone, especially on the first few albums. I understand however that pickups are a small variable. I couldn't get that tone even if I had exactly that gear. I would need those fingers and technique as well...
I also like Gilberts tone, but the dilemma is the same.
But you understand what tone I'm after anyway?

If it matters I plan use a RS guitarworks 280k pot for master volume. A 250k no-load master tone with a ,022qf cap. The no-load is of course to completely remove the tone from circuit in the max position. Clearest signal possible... Also a no-load blender pot. With that I can blend in any amount of the bridge pup in position 4-5, and the neck in position 1-2.

Andrew: Ain't those CV:s surprisingly good? I was floored when i tested it, never thought a Squier would have that kind of playability! What pups do you use?

Re: SSS advice...

If you want more of the earlier YJM tone you should get the DMZ HS pickups he used back then, they are even weaker thatn the curren SD pups. But as you said it's not just the gear it's player ultimately and Yngwie uses those 100w Marshalls full-volume and that is very importatn to the tone you get. And just can't get that sound on any home-studio gear unless it's 100w Marshall on full-volume if you know what I mean. But the YJM style pups aren't bad pickups if you're willing to push your other gear alittle more.

That being set if I were you I'd get the Gilbert set. It's a little more versatile.

Re: SSS advice...

Are the YJM's really that weak? I really don't need very powerful tips but they need to handle distortion well, and be clear and articulate. Not boomy but definitely not shrill. I like the Full Shred set I've got in one guitar. Very unforgiving but attitude and great response to pick attack.
I also like Dimarzio D-activators in another. Also clear and articulate.
Something like those maybe, but with single coil character mixed in.

Re: SSS advice...

Well they aren't "that weak" but they definitely aren't even medium output. The SD YJM's are a bit more powerful so they might get into the medium output category but no further. Also because both SD and DMZ YJM's are stacks they loose some of the high end because the humcancelling so to some they sound even dull and lifeless. I certainly like my SD YJM's on my Fender Yngwie strat. Heja Sverige ;)

But since they are low-output that gives them very unique character when used with alot of gain, compared to full-size-high-output humbuckers for instance, which has made them popular among shredders.

D-Activators and Full Shred are both quite trebly pickups so they have that certain singlecoil character to them.

Re: SSS advice...

Thanks Zhaggy! Well I've got a pretty versatile gear in my Axe Fx II. A very nice machine to have in your home studio.
So I can dial in a wide variety of stuff but the pups need be in the ballpark none the less...

Injector set is very interesting, I also think it's more versatile due to the area 67 in the middle?

Re: SSS advice...

The Axe-Fx 2 is a beast, so you definitely got your gear covered but still it's doesn't give to the sound that a full-volume tube amp will give.

And definitely injector set with the area67 in the middle is more versatile. Cause it gives more power in the neck and bridge where you want it and you can clean up and get totally different flavour in the middle. I've always thought that having the neck and middle pickups the same is a compromise. sort of an easy way out.

Yes they are! I had my Gibson SG Classic for 2 years, I was going to be traveling to Ukraine and Poland for 3 months and I didn't want to take a chance traveling with my SG. I figured I should get a bolt on to travel with that I could take apart and put in my luggage. I ended up winning a Lake Placid Blue 50s Strat on ebay for $200. No one else bid on it. My thinking was that I had heard they were decent for the money and I could always just replace the pickups when I got home if I liked the guitar enough. I ended up really really liking it and changed everything before I left. :D Even my tech was surprised at how good it was.

I put humbuckers in mine because at the time I was playing more hard rock stuff and wanted some thickness. At some point I will get a Candy Apple Red CV strat and put either Fender CS 69s in it or SSL-1s. 2 of my favorite sets of standard strat pups.

When I was in Ukraine, I saw lots of people playing stuff that would not be considered very good by most guitarists opinions. Lots of Squier and other cheap Strat copies, saw one cheap tele, one cheap les paul and one Fender Strat but that was from a touring band from New Jersey so I guess it doesn't really count. ;) They were mostly playing either Boss/MXR stuff or multi effects... lots of crate, line 6, and peavey SS amps. There were a few people who I remember just sounding great... I was really impressed and was really happy while I was traveling. I decided I wanted to spend more money doing my own thing, moving out of my parents house/traveling/other hobbies rather than constantly obsess over how my guitar sounded. I mean, if someone loves the instrument enough, they can make anything sound good.

I was looking around for cheap amps that sounded good but were loud with cleans. I play clean quite often. I stumbled upon a Yamaha G100 which was a twin reverb clone. 212 and 100 watts. The amp is extremely loud (louder than my Deville I had) and it just sounds really warm for a SS amp. In fact, I think it is my favorite amp I have owned and I payed $145 shipped for it from guitar center (I have owned a 1969 Bassman, a Hot Rod Deville, Peavey Delta Blues, Pro Junior, Jet City JCA22 in terms of tube amps). Along with that, I have come to like multi effects for effects (even though I don't use effects much) and just standard boss pedals for drive (DS-2, OD-3, SD-1). I am able to save more money rather than flipping and moving stuff all the time and now I am traveling out of country again in december. I love life now, and I sound better than I ever have. :D

Here is the original post from my thread when I finished everything. I still don't know how old the 59 in the bridge is. Someone on this forum told me it was from 1979 and another said it was most likely 79 -81. Whatever year it was, it sounds great. The neck pickup sounds nice too (mid-late 90s I believe), was a little bassy at first but adjusted the height and now I really like all positions.

Squier Classic Vibe 50s in Lake Placid Blue, got a couple weeks ago... made some changes....

Changes:
Seymour Duncan 59s (bridge wound by MJ)
CTS Pots
Orange drop caps
CPL or whatever their name is 3 way switch
Warmoth Pickguard
Switchcraft Jack
GFS Brass Block and bridge
oh and dig the middle tone knob. ;)

Great guitar, I love it, been playing it a ton for the past week or so. I would do a longer review but today sucked and I don't feel like it.

and I don't have a picture of the yamaha but this is the same amp. :)

Kinda off topic with the amp huh? Sorry... just love my stuff now...

About the Gibson, I found I really liked Strat style guitars and maple necks and this Squier was a lot of guitar. I sold my SG and don't regret it. :)

Anyway, I hope you find what you are looking for. They are really good guitars.

Re: SSS advice...

Cool story!
That guitar certainly don't look like a $200, more like $1200...
Funny thing is I've never been a strat player. I've never agreed with the necks.
My choice of drug is the Peavey Vandenberg. Thin neck, 24 frets, Gibson short scale and a playability to die for. It practically play itself... That's one reason I want a strattier single coil guitar here. I've got my humbucker super strat ground covered.
I still wouldn't compare the CV with one of those, but it's the first strat I've played that I really liked.
Sure, speedy runs suffer and I miss being able to play 22nd fret and above, But it's a helluva lot of guitar for ridiculous money... Highly recommended for anyone looking for a cheap, nice strat!

Re: SSS advice...

I'm going to differ a bit with the rest of the responses -

SSL-1's in all 3 positions. Let a Strat be a Strat. SSL-1 is wound a little on the hotter side for a single coil. You can get a lot of versatility with a tone control on the bridge. With the Axe-FX II it can be what you want - I've got an Axe-Fx Ultra and with my weak pickups some of the sample patches are sooo high in gain, certainly adequate for anything I think Yngwie-esque.

If you want something slightly hotter, then maybe a Twangbanger in the bridge, but I'm thinking for best quack stick with the not-hot pickup in the bridge. I did this with my last Strat and very pleased with the result - contemplating doing it to my other one. The standard bridge pickup is not ice-pick city with a tone on the bridge.

If noise is a problem and you can scrape up the $$ an Ilitch Pickguard seems quite the treat - should be very similar to the old Suhr SSC systems (Which Ilitch made, BTW). Those were very effective (and the effect on tone was almost nothing).

Re: SSS advice...

You could look into active single coils. The only way I go with single coils now. They seem to be able to do the quack and vintage stuff well, but can also kick hard.

Re: SSS advice...

Another CV Lover. :friday:

I tried one of those CV Jazz basses, and I was floored by the sound. Maybe the quality wasn't perfect, but I could play that with my Stingrays any day and be proud to say that's my bass.

Re: SSS advice...

Ok, I pushed the button today and ordered the Injector set. I hope it'll live up to my expectations...

Thanks to all for your help!

Pulled the trigger as well on the Virtual Solo and Injector bridge; got them wound for lefty so I won't get them until early December though.
