SSS strat with a Floyd . . .

Anybody use one? Is there any significant difference in sound between this and a strat with a 2 point modern USA trem?

Re: SSS strat with a Floyd . . .

I haven't owned one, but I've played one a few times. It was maybe the slightest bit brighter than a Strat with the 2 point American Standard bridge, but not hugely so. I noticed the difference in feel quite a bit more.

Re: SSS strat with a Floyd . . .

The Floyd will rob more tone especially bass. I have found that by using stronger output single coils that this problem can be almost a non factor. vintage output singles however sound thin and squeeky with a Floyd so I would not recomend useing them. I have found a single coil with an output of 9 or higher tends to handle the floyd rose better as the magic number seems to be around 9 or 10 output to deal with the tone loss of a Floyd. After that its just a matter of finding the resinant peak your after and you'll be doing those Steve Stevens "flesh for fantasy" floyd bends he did on Billy Idols Rebel Yell album.
A Super V locking trem seems to be a good cross between a vintage trem and a Floyd trem. I have never used one so I dont want to misslead you on that. check out the reviews on youtube or their websight. I heard the older ones had a few problems when they first went into production but they seemed to have the bugs worked out and even Eric Johnson has one on one of his strats. I like floyds for deep bends and upbends but I had to adjust the output of the pickups I wanted to use to use the Floyd. A lot of companies used single coils with Floyd Rose trems in the 80's. Many were equiped with Seymour Duncan single coils like Kramer guitars for instance. They had an excellent sound so you may want to ask Seymour Duncan Co what they recomend too.

Don't have it anymore but...my Crazy Ass Warmoth SRV Floyd Tribute...would completely agree about 9k Single Coils as I had Vintage DiMarzio SDS1 in Neck/Bridge and a SD Quarter Pounder RWRP in Middle hooked up to 500k Gibson Volume and a pair of Fender TBX Tone Pots.

Re: SSS strat with a Floyd . . .

Hmm. I was thinking of something like an SSL-1 APS-1 SSL-5 combo for this. Too weak maybe? I don't want firebreathing p90 style single coils, I like the glassy strat sounds, just prefer a trem that doesn't go out of tune.

The super V looks like a cool trem, but at more than twice the price of a Floyd there's no way I would ever buy one.

Re: SSS strat with a Floyd . . .

I will say the set up did SRV & Jimi perfectly through the Marshall JMP I had at the time. Personally not a fan of the APS1 but I have recently discovered tha SSL1 by accident and they are very impressive; Classic Strat Tones in the Neck/Mid Positions of my Kramer E.E. PCI and it has a Vintage '86 OFR with Floyd Upgrades 42mm Big Brass Block.

I think you'd be fine with an SSL-5/6 (depending on radius). In the Floyd SSS Strats I played, the bridge pickup was always the weak (bright) link; the neck and middle pickups didn't seem to be affected as much.
