SSS vs. HSS vs. HSH vs. SSH vs. HH vs. HS vs. SH

Re: SSS vs. HSS vs. HSH vs. SSH vs. HH vs. HS vs. SH

I know it sounds like a strange combo...

I've got the Les Paul BFG with the dark P90 in the neck and the bright BB3 in the bridge.

With my Mesa F30, I've got some very different tones right there. If I mix the two, I even get a little cluck (not a quack).

I'm always attracted to simple plain H, though.

I own H, HH, & HS guitars. Love the neck S. The neck H has always been worthless to me, until I got the Hellraiser. The EMG 85 in the neck sounds like a huge S. It's awesome.

Hmm, although it's still theoretical (have played a lot but haven't actually "owned"), the HSh (Hum-Sing-miniHum) combo (perhaps with a blend pot, I have and love it on my hSh Strat but ain't all that clear on a HSh) seems to be what I really liked the best.

I need a fat enough (but at the same time articulate enough) bridge for heavy parts and solo (which a mini humbucker just doesn't seem to deliver), my favorite clean sound is Strat's neck+mid where I find that a mini-humbucker on the neck is perfect in that it gives me plenty of "chunk" for lead parts and still holds it's own with the quack of a S (on my Strat, dunno how it'll fare on other guitars). Plus, since I almost always place my pick in the space between the neck and middle pu I have no problem with hitting the m. pu like others do while I can use it for a more EQ balanced, lower output sound (for rockier situations or less aggressive gain in general).

In short, every pu has its' place while there is nothing I want to do but can't with this setting.

HSH would be my second but I can't think of a way to properly use all the desired options without making it too complicated.
(plus there's the string pull, I haven't noticed it yet but have a feeling that if I were to stick with it, I would...)
A HH is the best at what it does best but since I always preferred the sound of a Strat over a Less Paul, for me it just doesn't seem to do a lot of other things. I'd probably own one but only if a had a couple of others for those "other" things...
