Stack Humbuckers – Phase Issues?

Stack Humbuckers – Phase Issues?

Fender American Standard strat, STK-S2N (neck), STK-S2N (middle), JB Jr. (bridge).

Green + bare (together and grounded)
Red + White (together and floating)
Black (5 way switch)
All jumpers and big orange cap

Definitely sounds like I have phasing issues even though I wired it according to the provided diagram.
Doesn’t matter if I use a marshall, fender or Helix through FRFR speakers.
Single pole Pup wiring typically has the center pickup reversed.

But in stack humbuckers… you already have opposing polarity coils in each of the 3 pickups.

What is the correct orientation in this case?

-read some great articles on polarity and phase – but not sure of the correct way.

Any help is much appreciated.20170131_231113.jpg

In which switch position do you have phase issues?

I just reviewed video from saturday night gig.

bridge position, middle position and the pos in between have the out of phase sound.

the neck position sounds fine.

thanks

Re: Stack Humbuckers – Phase Issues?

out of phase should only happen when you have two pups on, if the individual pups sound weird then something else is going on. 500k pots?

your red/white connections are isolated from each other, correct?

Is there a way to provide several close up pics? Or even a sound clip going through the pickup positions? An 'out of phase' sound is generally 2 pickups together. Unless for some reason, you have the bottom coil active instead of the top, which I guess is possible.

Re: Stack Humbuckers – Phase Issues?

Stacked humbuckers are out of phase with themselves. That’s now they cancel hum.

But with any humbucker the composite signal is in phase.

You can’t wire a stacked or duel blade single coil style pickup in reverse to hum cancel with a real single coil. This is because the humbucker does not hum! So there’s no common mode noise to cancel.

So just wire it up with the same polarity as the others.

Re: Stack Humbuckers – Phase Issues?

I made short video clips but they're not posted on any websites yet.

I will try to do that this weekend.

I don't remember what value the pots are... 250 or 500.. I will check and answer soon.

hmmm red and white isolated?... I think so, but will confirm.

I have 2 strats wired the same way... I will test again with no amp.. direct to DAW and see if it is different.

I will also check that the polarity is the same for all...

Thanks everyone for the replies great tips.

:)

Make sure the red and white pairs are isolated from each other as well.

Make sure the red and white pairs are isolated from each other as well.

the red white connection is the series link between the two coils of each pup. you want to solder that pair together then isolate it from everything else or you will/could get issues. in your pic, it looks like you have the red/white from all three pups bundled together. thats fine as long as the bare wire connections are isolated/insulated/covered so they cannot touch.

Thanks everyone!
I will be checking the red/white isolation (which I think.. I did isolate them) as well as all the other suggestions this weekend, which is now upon us.. yay.

Re: Stack Humbuckers – Phase Issues?

phasing was not the issue after all... it was modeled cabs... I'm using a Helix and didn't have the correct settings on the amp model.

I will still check the solutions everyone provided and post what I find... but I think it's ok now... will find out at the gig saturday night.

Thanks everyone...

Oh I get it now.

I was confused at first by you referring to your stacked single coil pups as "stacked humbuckers". Yes they are stacked, and yes they buck hum (because they are stacked). But technically, if you had a "stacked humbucker" it would have 4 coils...2 coils stacked on top of 2 coils. Wow, that would be a weird monster.
