Stage monitors - where to start

So my church music group is looking around to get some stage monitors, I've been volunteered to scout out the possibilities.

So...where to start?

The band/group consists in general of 3 guitars, accordion, keyboard, sometimes bongos, 6 vocalists...

Re: Stage monitors - where to start

I had good luck with the Peavey's as well. Also, Yamaha makes a decent monitor at a good price. It's been 6-7 years since I was shopping for monitors, but there are several very decent ones that are still in the budget range. I seem to recall that if you wanted to get a significantly better monitor you really had to increase your budget drastically.

I'm sure there are even more affordable items on the market now that will sound more than adequate for your needs while not breaking the church's budget.

My band has made use of Mackie SRM 350s or 450s (I forget which) in the past. I have no idea what grade that is or if it is even supposed to be a monitor, but they did the job.

IDK about overseas pricing and such.

I bought a JBL EON 15" a coupe of years ago for a reasonable price. It's a great monitor.

Re: Stage monitors - where to start

QSC K series are good powered monitors that can double as PA speakers.

Re: Stage monitors - where to start

For a cheap box I like the JBL jrx112m...~$320. I have had one for years. It needs a small cut at 1K to balance out the sound but other than that it's a nice box. My EV-sx300's are really great but twice the price.

I recommend you don't go really cheap. Cheap monitors usually sound like they are coming out of the box they shipped in and it can be hard to get any real volume out of them before they start feeding back.

I have to agree that the JBL JRX112m is a really nice monitor for the price. I wouldn't go cheaper than that. Sometimes you get what you pay for!

I'm guessing passive is the way to go? I was contemplating getting active ones that could possible back-up as main speakers on smaller venues or presentations and like. Thoughts?

There are plenty of active options out there to be sure.

Give us a run-down of the gear (especially your mixing board) you already have and how many different monitor mixes you're looking for.

Mixer is a Behringer UB2222FX. I know we have an amplifier for two other speakers we're using. I'd have to check it out more in detail, most likely later this week I'll get access to it.

We're looking to have at least one monitor for the vocalists in order to hear themselves and a/the main guitar/instrument. Then ideally another one for the remaining instruments to hear what they're going through, namely a classical guitar and accordion.

Re: Stage monitors - where to start

+1 on the JBL's mentioned above. Good bang for the buck. If I was doing it again, I would keep a few things in mind: 1- Real horn, no piezo's. a real compression driver gives a high mid range piezo's cannot. 2- Small paper. The smaller the paper cone, the more natural mid range available ( I realize this is a generality). The best floor monitor I ever heard was a three 8" EAW...........

Re: Stage monitors - where to start

Yeah check all the gear then get back to us, it's not always a problem, but the way some mixer's/EQ's and PA systems in general work can sometimes cause a mix match in power, frequencies and that sort of stuff, the last thing you need to do is go out buy some monitors form them to wear out way to soon, or something gowrong because its conflicting somewhere with the other gear. :)
