Staggered gear ratios for tuners

Any of y'all heard of this? There's a company out there saying you need a slower tuner for lower notes. I think that's silly, but then again I've never tried it
 
I've never heard of it either. "Need" sounds like a marketing term. "Nice" would be a convenience / fun term. I've never had a problem tuning my guitars with whatever tuners they came with.
 
The whole thing about Ratio Tuners

It's been a thing for almost a decade now

Staggered with different ratios for each string

And while just this much of a turn being the same for each string sounds good

Different size strings don't stretch in the same way

The g string always needs a touch up and the low E

But the B is almost always dead on
 
I could see it being neat to use on a bass. The low B (or whatever note) on my Ibanezes is always a bit finicky because it takes such a small amount of movement to overshoot. But like Artie said, it's never actually been a problem. I certainly wouldn't go out and replace my tuners over it.
 
Why not? The tuner hasn't been upgraded for years. As long as we insist on wrapping strings around a post, you might as well make it so 1 turn causes the same amount of pitch change on all strings.

It definitely makes sense
 
It makes a lot of sense on bass because the larger diameter a string gets, the faster string tension drops with the same amount of length.

IE A 10% larger diameter from one string to another makes a bigger difference in tension the bigger the string is.
