Staggered tuners...

Bought me a set of Staggered Locking tuners for my Strat.
Where do I install the short pegs?? On small strings or big stings??
The originals were all same length.

Re: Staggered tuners...

You saw those on one of my social media pages? Yeah the Graphtech Ratios are great. Different ratio for each string. Really predictable tuning. One full revolution of the peg is a tone in pitch. Super easy to tune, and change tunings. Really cool idea and very handy too.

Re: Staggered tuners...

I could never see the point to those staggered tuners. All they did was make three of the tuning pegs a little longer than normal.

I've got Gotoh Magnum Lock adjustable tuners. The longest ones are not longer than standard tuners. I used these so I didn't need to use string trees on my Strat build. They worked great.

Don't they eliminate the need for string trees? That's what I thought.

Yep, exactly.

No, they do not. I fitted a set of Gotoh HAPM tuners to a Strat (HAPM have adjustable post height AND are locking), and i tweaked the posts to get the top string holes as low as they could possibly be ... any lower and the hole would have started to disappear making it impossible to get the string through).

I set the guitar up and checked it out ... definite tone loss on the top two stings. At least one tree is still required for the top 'e' and 'b' strings, unless you think there's something good about losing tone when fitting new tuners. It's obvious that on a Strat, there is not enough break angle over the nut for the e and b strings even when the tuner anchors the string as close to the headstock face as possible.

Re: Staggered tuners...

Hmmm interesting. I did the same with the HAPM tuners and didn't really find any issues. Maybe I should go back and have a closer listen, but I've been playing it nearly a year and it's sounded great to my ears.

Agree!

There is no angle to a Fender headstock (just an offset) so trees are necessary to create the proper break angle over the nut.

If you don't think you need trees, then you probably don't play guitar.

Re: Staggered tuners...

Eric Johnson possibly has the most sensitive ears on the planet. His signature Stratocaster: staggered tuners and no string trees.

Re: Staggered tuners...

This. If E.J. can't hear tone loss from them , I sure as hell am not going to. And it's pretty unlikely that anyone in the audience will either.

Re: Staggered tuners...

String trees compensate for a badly-cut nut. That's why Fenders come with them stock, because the nuts are mass-produced and it's easier to just slam a tree on there than it is to custom-cut a nut.

Doesn't his sig strat have an thin and somewhat angled headstock?

Re: Staggered tuners...

Wouldn't using more string turns on the normal tuning posts give the same effect as that of a staggered tuners? Although that means it will take a while to wind the string, but it's a similar idea, no?

I can still see the need to have a string tree for the e & B strings even with that idea, but I think it would eliminate the need for a string tree for the G & D strings if there is one.

You can say that because you have compared his hearing capabilities with every other human beings hearing capabilities, using advanced measuring equipment ? I'm impressed.

Cranky much? Note the word "possibly". That implies that he POSSIBLY has the most sensitive ears on the planet, but doesn't emphatically state the he DOES have the most sensitive ears on the planet. Whatever the case, the man is known to have very good ears.

Why did I even waste my time replying to that? lol.
