You know how all the big (popular) bands have all the gear but their tone still sounds gerneric?

Well, here - Vote your favourite tone from these bands.

I know there are only a few bands listed but - I feel this gives the biggest range of tone.

I Voted AC/DC...they have to be the best example of what Marshalls can really do..such a full rythm sound...

I'd vote for a cross between AC/DC and Audioslave.

I like my cleans to be like Hendrix's clean/strat tone.

I like the midgain to be like old ZZ Top/ AC/DC

I like my highgain tone to be like Chernobyl through a 4-12.
With tone, not fizz. Like 2 Jerry Cantrells in stereo, ideally.

I'm a big fan of Tom Morello (RATM, Audioslave) and his dry, very focused tone. I didn't really think the neck pickup was for anything good until I started getting into the particulars of Mr. Morello's playing.
Also, I'm out of that 'scooped mids' Ol' Skool Metallica sound and think that the St. Anger tone just sounds like a wet-fart. I'm more a fan of the somewhat more middy-sounding tones they got on Load and Reload.

I voted RATM/Audioslave, I've always liked there tones. Everything Closed Eye said about Metallica is right on the money in my opinion too, there new stuff sounds pretty bad. I never thought I'd hear songs consisting mostly of SNARE DRUM?!?

I voted Dreamtheater, Cause I love JP's awesome tone with the IIC+ and the Road King, mmmm, TONE HEAVEN with JP!

Mesa boogie 6L6 tone is where its at.

Nothin' for me in the list. :( though i enjoy listen to old RATM. I find Morello has groove and his sound is awesome for his style of music.

Black album Metallica.

My sound is a bit of a crossup between Metallica, Nirvana, and Black Sabbath.

Re: Standard Tone - Hot or not?

I think AC/DC has the best old school guitar into a Marshall tone ever...

Tom Morello has got a great Rock tone, not real high gain, reallt pretty clean compared to most other players of today...keep in mind Im not talking about his tricks and madness, just his basic tone...I think is wonderful.

John from the RHCP has got the classic Strat/marshall...strat/fender...strat/fuzz face down, I think John's strat/tele tone is great...very Hendrix, but still his own.

As far as Metallica...Load and Reload were their best tones to date...the old stuff just sounds the same to me from record to record, Kirk has always have a real bad Wah Wah tone to me, I like midgange...they do not, and i hate EMG's...On Load and Reload they got awway from EMG's a bit, and used a lots of older amps with stopboxes, and pasive and even vuntage Buckers and even some Strats and Tele's...which gave them great sounds!

For the Record, as far has High gain Nu-Metal goes, I think thet the guys in Sevendust are on top...(I get their names confusedbut one of them uses marshall geat and really pushes the mids...the other uses Mesa stuff and really pushes the botom and top...on stage they have a great full, but still very highgain sound...it really sounds like one very large guitar player!

The guy from Linkin Park really has no tone in my book...nor is the band any good.

As for Filter...I always though they had very interesting guitar sounds...they make good use of the studio, but I have heard a few live things, and it falls short...the guitars have so much gain, plus they are tuned down so far, it just sounds like mud...but in the Studio, they have some really great guitar sounds.

Re: Standard Tone - Hot or not?

RHPC, best example of strat tone in modern music, and some of the best examples of strat tone period. Not to mention that John Frucante has a playing style so much like Hendrix it's scary. Before I'm flamed for that comment, think of how Hendrix would be playing today, and in today's music (and dont give me the "Hendrix wouldnt play today's music", it's for the theory) and it would probably sound alot like JF.

DT with AC/DC running a close second. Then again, that's just my opinion. That's why such comparisons are so difficult. This is a topic that is WAY too subjective. Furthermore, the comparisons can never be equal...even the two Metallica comparisons.

Re: Standard Tone - Hot or not?

This one was hard, but believe it or not I chose Sevendust. They aren't exactly a "new" nu-metal band, they've been around for a long time. I've always loved their stuff and I think they're one of the originators of that style, so I give them credit for it. If you have ever seen them live before then you know that they are nothing short of incredible and the tone is great, just very full and in-your-face :headbang:
