Start Pickup Replacement

I am new to SD, and I would like to replace a Squier Stratocaster stock pickups. Currently I have narrowed down to 2 setups:

:dot: Setup 1:
  • Little Screaming Demon Bridge
  • Duckbuckers Middle
  • Vintage Rails Neck

:dot: Setup 2:
  • Hot Rails Bridge
  • Duckbuckers Middle
  • Little Screaming Demon Neck

Which setup might be best for Heavy Blues/Rock, Neoclassical Metal and Lead Metal? Also does the coils impedance have a factor on combining pickups? :question:
I have noticed that SVR-1n are aproxx 2.31 ohms and SLSD-1b are 13.35 ohms. Might this cause tone differences?:reporter:

Thanks in advance :smokin: :feedback:

This is one of those cases where DCR is misleading. The Vintage Rails are measured with the coils in parallel. That causes the reading to read 1/4th of its series reading. Think of the VR as being approx 9.41k for comparison purposes.

Thank you for your reply about the impedance :) Can anybody here advise me what setup should I use from the ones I suggested? THX in Advance :)

Hmm, dunno, the Hot Rails, depending on your amp, might be too hot for what you're after. The duckbucker sounds great for the middle but I'm not too crazy about the Vintage Rails for the neck. Maybe you should check the Cool Rails for the Neck and compare it to the JB jr. and the Little '59, see if any one fits you better (I'd be good if you checked the Audio Samples as well).

Finally, depending on what you'll choose for the neck then decide on the bridge.
I'd suggest the Hot Rails for a more powerful neck scenario like the Li'l Screamin' Demon(n), opting for the Li'l Screamin' Demon(b) or the JB jr.(b) if you chose sth closer to the Little '59 area for the neck...

Re: Start Pickup Replacement

cool rails neck, vintage rails mid, hot rails bridge is what ive heard many people suggest.

or

cool rails bridge with vintage neck and mid.

from what ive heard, cool rails is still pretty hot, just not as hot as the hot rails.

and i have a hot rails, and i can tell you that although it is hot, it is pretty well balanced, and can be tamed with a volume knob.

Re: Start Pickup Replacement

When I decided to upgrade pickups on my Squier, I was first considering DiMarzio squished humbuckers. The reason is that they are a little less expensive than SDs, and I wasn't planning to spend too much on upgrading a Squier. Then I heard about the Everything Axe set, and I saw that it only cost slightly more than a trio of DiMarzios. The variety of tones from this set is sufficient for the styles you listed, but there are a lot of cool options out there for you.

Re: Start Pickup Replacement

Thank you for your replies :arms:. Based on feedback received, I am spending some time listening to samples and again, narrowed to a "pre" final setup :scratchch:
:dot:
  • Little 59´or Cool Rails ---> Neck :question::question:
  • Duckbuckers ---> Middle
  • Li'l Screamin' Demon ---> Bridge

Now I am refining the neck area, and any opinions are still welcome. Also I would like to refer that I prefer SeymourDuncan :27: over Dimarzio, because in my opinion :eek13: , SD does a better job on making pickups. SD pickups have more warmer tone. I not saying that Dimarzio is bad, just SD have characteristics that I like more.:kabong:

Re: Start Pickup Replacement

Hmm, I think that either one will produce an equally balanced result that would leave you satisfied. Thus the final decision will go on taste alone.

With that said, I'll just say that I like having a rails pu on the neck of a 21-22fret guitar because one nice trick I do is use the upper rail as the 24th fret!!! No use choosing this however if you better prefer the other one's tone

Cheers!
