Starter Bass Amp?

Hey guys.
Not sure whether I should post this here or in the bass forum.

Anyway, I'm trying to get a buddy of mine to take up bass. So, we need an amp. We both know close to nothing about bass gear, so I'm turning to your guys.

Just looking for an amp to jam with, so can keep up with the rest of the band, as well as handle small to medium gigs.

We're playing heavy metal, but I wouldn't be above a basic amp and a fuzz box or something.

Thanks a lot.

peaveys make good bang for buck. Make sure it has a nice direct out too, so if you have a small underpowered combo, you can run a line into the PA as well.

I like the sound of Carvins and for the price they are loaded with features

but may be out of a beginners price range
although that was my "beginner amp"

Heck the Micro series aint bad at all

Re: Starter Bass Amp?

Let's put it this way: a good practice amp for a guitar is around 10 to 25 watts.

Add another zero to those numbers, and you'll be looking at a good "starter" bass amp.

My call? An Ampeg BA-115.

Re: Starter Bass Amp?

The Ampeg is a great amp, but I picked up an LA 100W 1 12" combo used at GC for $120.00. It sounds fine and we used it a few gigs too. I usually play through a Deluxe Reverb(22W) the other guitar player uses a blackface Princeton Reverb(15W), our Keys normally go through the PA so the 100W works, but for metal..... you have to be careful with the wattage of the other amps, and it also has to do with the output of the bass. I have a '78 Jazz bass which has very low output pickups but my bassist at the time had an Ibanez and some Hybrid bass that had a lot more output then the Jazz and it was substantially louder then my Jazz bass. Didnt sound as good but for practice/starting out 100W should be ok....

Re: Starter Bass Amp?

I got the ampeg BA115 a little after when I started out. I still use it to this day, it's an awesome amp for beginners and can be used for most gigs, while getting REALLY LOW volume for the bedroom and stuff. I actually really like solid state bass amps, the tightness and compression gives you more note to note consistency and prevents your bass from getting overpowering. It's about $300 new and you can find it cheaper used. Pretty big though, not fun to lug around.

Re: Starter Bass Amp?

I really like my little Fender Rumble. It's a 75 watt one and it's a great 4 band EQ and Overdrive built in. If you turn up the volume a little bit, then you've got a great live amp as well.
