So as a beginner what kind of effects should I get for practicing (and planning to play outside soon) ? I actually have a Friedman BE-OD as my distortion do I have to add some effects ? what kind ?

What amp do you have? I would start there.

My recommendation would be to save up for an amp with a 1x12 and ideally a dirty channel you like, particularly if you plan to play out.

No matter how awesome your dirt pedals are, the amp will limit their awesomeness, particularly the low end with a 1x8 speaker.

Depending on your budget we can make a recommendation. Something like a Boss Katana might be a game changer for you, much more than a pedal. It has effects too btw. Or tell us what you find used in your local craigslist.

Sorry if this wasn’t the answer you were after, trying to be helpful and honest here [emoji4]

+1 to this answer. A solid amp foundation is FAR more important than pedals if you’re at the start of your journey.

Delay or reverb will also add to your tone. Once you get an amp with an effects loop you could also get a EQ to help shape your tone. A wah pedal or phaser can also be used as less subtle forms of tone coloration, but those are the only two metal type effects (other than distortion) that I find usable in more obvious manners.

This applies to all genres, but there is nothing worse than a guitar tone completely drowned with effects, unless it's ambient guitar, which even then requires some moderation.

I agree with saving up for an amp. But take the time while saving to work on technique, and becoming a better player. This can even be done on an unplugged electric.

+1, you’ll be amazed how more rounded of a player and writer you’ll be playing clean or acoustic since it forces you to focus on your technique and melody.
All the little details that are usually lessened with rivers of saturated gain.

The BE-OD is awesome, judging by the times I've heard it, so if you got an amp with a nice basic clean/ light crunch sound and out that pedal in front of it for your heavier tones, you would be golden. Apart from some reverb or delay, anything else would just be icing on the cake.

^^Pro tip: Volume and Distortion should never be in any position other than full tilt, regardless of the pedal or genre.

Another +1 to save for an amp.

Your Line 6 has Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Reverb and Delay. From my experience, pedals other than time based effects like Chorus, Reverb and Delay sound kind of bad into a Spyder.

Take the cost of that BE-OD and double it and you can get a used 6505 1x12 combo. That’ll get you somewhere...

Re: Starter Guitar Effects/Pedals for Heavy metal

I hate to pile on and I don't like it when an OP ask for advice in one area and is steered towards another ...but. If you are planning on playing metal with a full band you should have at least 50 watts and a 12 inch speaker. If not your amp is going to fustrate the hell out of you. You will have to push it so hard to be heard (if you even are) it wont matter what stomps you have infront of it.

Re: Starter Guitar Effects/Pedals for Heavy metal

The BE-OD is a great start, so long as you're not aiming for the most extreme metal sub genres, though I agree that the 15 watt Spider probably isn’t going to let you get the best out of that great pedal though.

The 50 or 100 watt Boss katana would be where I started if I were in your shoes. It doesn’t have all the features that the Line 6 stuff does, but by all reports, the sound is much better, and since you’re new, I’d focus more on easier-to-dial-in gear than having every option in the book. I’ve been playing for 18 years, and it took me a long time to get a satisfying high-gain sound from my Line 6 Pod HD500.

You may even find that you don’t need the BE-OD with that Brown Sound channel on the Katana.

I wouldn’t worry about a ton of external effects at this point in your playing. Just get a good base tone that makes it more fun to practice. You can worry about some delay and reverb from there.

Also, I didn’t see where you mentioned your guitar, but a the right pickups in even a cheap guitar can be a huge upgrade in tone.

Buy used where you can, since you’ll probably end up experimenting a lot with different gear over the next year or two. You’ll lose less money when you move stuff along this way.

Please expand on this? Serious?

Re: Starter Guitar Effects/Pedals for Heavy metal

LOL Thanks for geting back so fast. I keep my volume on my od dimed, no gain. I think the OP should spend their money on an amp 1st. Long as the guitar can stay in tune that is. Thanks Chistopher
