Static has me stumped.

Hi,
I have a 2000 Les Paul Classic ebony finish. A while ago, maybe a year, I started noticing a scratchy/staticy noise whenever I pulled the guitar across my body while playing. Lately it's become worse. The worst area is the toggle switch cover screws. But just rubbing the finish on the back of the guitar will produce the staticy sound. I've checked all the connections as best I can but I'm really stuck. I'm thinking of stripping the electronics out and completely rewiring the guitar. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds like a grounding problem to start with, maybe the ground to the bridge?

The cavity for the bridge ground on the les paul is a PAIN to get to or even check sometimes

Something like that happened to me once and I attributed it to my staticky sweater. I changed shirts and the problem went away. I don't really know if that helps, but that was my problem. The scratchy sound was VERY faint for me though.
