Steps to get a polyurethane finish on a glued in guitar

I am planning on building a kit guitar with a glued-in neck and I wanted to run this by some people in the know to see if I have this correct....

first I take the body and neck from the kit. mahogany body has holes drilled with maple cap or veneer and neck has fretted fretboard with rosewood fingerboard and mahogany neck...

Step 1? make sure neck and body fit
step 2? sand smooth to prepare for sanding sealer - let dry and sand

glue in neck clamp and let sit for 24-48 hours

step 3? use ___________ black paint to give several coats of solid gloss
step 4? light sand to remove bumps imperfections and to smooth
step 5? apply coats of polyurathane to the body let dry
step 6 use ___________________wax/polish to buff to shine...

is that about right?

If you're gluing in a neck, that bit gets done before any of the finish prep is started.....wood glue only works on raw wood.

You should make sure the neck fit is tight and any work with sanding before gluing is only to improve fit.

I had planned on taping off the pocket and the neck joint initially but if you think gluing the neck in beforehand is a better idea then hell.... I was planning on using lots of painters tape... ;)

Also, if I paint black, should I mask off the binding some how and if so, what is recommended because I don't see painters tape working to keep the black paint off the binding on the body...

Thanks again in advance.

Also, if I'm using a polyurethane rattle can finish, then what is recommended after a rattle can sanding sealer? In other words would rattle can Krylon work before applying the polyurethane?

Mahogany will need a grain filler too. You can put on a pass of S&S first to prevent the mahogany from absorbing a lot of grain filler or put the Grain filler on first and then the S&S. Are you dying the wood though? If your going to dye the wood, do that first, so you don't have a situation that the wood won't take a dye because there is already a sealer or something on it.
