Stereo Effects Loop With A Mono Pedal?

Guys....I don't normally stick things in my effects loop...I want to try running a Boss GE-7 into the loop of this Vox Valvetronix amp..The amp is stereo out and has a stereo loop,so if I Put a Boss GE-7 which is mono into the effects loop,will it make the entire output of the amp mono? Is it something we would notice? Should I be getting a stereo EQ instead?

If you run it now you will only have the EQ on one side or the other, if you hVave any stereo pedal you could use it as a spliter even if you didn't want to use the effect...come out of the FX send in to the EQ, then into say a stereo delay then go right and left into the FX returns, that will get your EQ on both channels.

If you run it now you will only have the EQ on one side or the other, if you hVave any stereo pedal you could use it as a spliter even if you didn't want to use the effect...come out of the FX send in to the EQ, then into say a stereo delay then go right and left into the FX returns, that will get your EQ on both channels.

Thanks buddy....Would I still be better off in the effects loop with the GE-7 or just after a few overdrive/distortion pedals inline to the front end of the amp? I thought the pedal might be quieter and work better in the loop?

Is that right BTW...you have one send jack and 2 return jacks??? I assumed that was the set-up. Anyway...I think any EQ will work better in the loop, and while I did like my GE-7 it can be a little noisey so you might like it better in the loop. I've never been inside of the GE-7 but I know from modding tons of other pedals that I can get rid of most of the noise by using high quality caps,metal film resistors,and I'll see what kind of opamps are in that pedal...I'll probably boost the input a bit in the lows with a cap change...I'll always find ways of making the pedal work better... :wink:

Usually, there is a send marked mono on stereo outputs, isn't there...? Anyway, you should definitely fool around with that pedal some (add another to your arsenal of modifications!)

The manual says specifically to use only the L send for mono effects,but it doesn't say anything about what return?...Seems they already have it worked out for mono pedal users,plus the loop is in series....I'll have to see what happens I guess?

I Know that great caps,metal film resistors,and better opamps can really quiet a pedal...My DS1,SD1,and Tube Screamers are quieter for these reasons...Maybe I'll look at the power supply also...

2 seperate cables....1/4" on one side and 2 1/4" jacks on the other...Right? I'll have to see if it makes a difference just using the Left send and L return jacks on the Vox first? Appreciate the postings..

Just buy another EQ pedal. Cheaper than buying a stereo EQ. I like stereo- I almost always run my rig that way, but it is ampless- I go straight to the PA.

You need a stereo EQ with the above setup normally ...But the question is John ... do you really need one? Now if it was one send and a L and R return, well then you could run a Y split off the output of the GE-7 into the L and R return( as mentioned already), as in that case any stereo processing done by the amp would be down after from a single source. Any stereo output pedals (chorus,delay) would come after the GE-7 of course.


Concerning the left mono thing, either one of two things either left send, and left return only, or left send and *Y* it out to the left and right returns ... no way of knowing what the setup of that amp is internally as per jack switching ... Even though you did, I'd glance over the manuall again, i find it realy odd that they leave you hanging with half the info you need.

Before buying another Eq pedal, I'd just go with a stereo rack, better quality anyway ... BTW John, some amps are a bit picky about plugging and unplugging the returns *while* the amp is on, some are cool, and others make a big *loud* pop ... So if you haven't dealt with this before, I thought I'd warn you in advance (I've seen *loops returns* and *power amp inputs* do it)... I'd flip that power switch off before changing the connections (you probably do anyway, as per proper protocol, but still) ...

if it says use the L for mono try to just use one like I said early on with a stereo pedal of some kind as a spliter, if that;s no good then maybe try some thing else. BTW...there is a store up here with 4 GE-7's I just say Sunday, they are used and I belive all 4 are right at $50.00 each...let me know if you want me to make a run!

Thanks for the all the help guys...I don't currently own any stereo pedals? I have one GE-7 on order that cost me $90....Wish it would work in mono and not cost me more cash....I'll have to experiment I guess...

you could try the mono (L) send and a Stereo Y cord for the return. Stew-Mac sells such a cord...I have never used theirs but have heard good things.
