Stereo rig with two of the same amps

Hello,

at the moment I play a Laney IRT Studio (through the D.I. out into a Torpedo) and now I want to expand my rig by making it stereo.

Could I just use another IRT Studio, tweak the EQ different and maybe use another booster (DS-1 instead of TS9) or would it still sound to similar to create stereo feeling?

The biggest advantages for me are, that I could switch the channels of the simultaneously through my MS-3 (with a little DIY cable solution) and that my rig wouldn't grow that much than with an extra head that I have to carry around.

Sure, although it would sound better with a little modulation or delay on one side (and not the other).

Re: Stereo rig with two of the same amps

What if you put a pedal with a stereo output in the loop, send one side back in to the amp, then out of the IRT’s emulated out, while the other side of the pedal goes to the Torpedo? Then you have the same basic amp sound, but through two different cabinet emulations, which would hopefully fill out the sound.

The most common reason to run a stereo rig is for time-based or modulation effects. The easiest way to achieve that would be to split the signal to stereo after the Torpedo and put your time & modulation effects there.

I'll give it a try

Never tought of this. Good idea

Re: Stereo rig with two of the same amps

I agree with the above, it will sound more multi-mono than ‘stereo’. We percieve stereo as phase, amplitude and time differences between left and right. (Stereo = Left (minus) Right). Probably easier to process the single amp into stereo than to duplicate it. For live use you really just need a power amp for the second side. The TC Mimiq, Keely 30mS, strymon DECO and Eventide H9 excel at transforming mono sources to stereo.

On the idea that Stereo sounds means different sounds coming from two different sources I would try using a different amp to accentuate the stereo effect, or at least same amp with a different speaker. Also keep in mind the TC Electronics Mimiq, I have not tried but it is meant to emulate the feel of two different players. Thant along what other have said about time-based and modulation effects should be very interesting.

The MS-3 got an doubbler effect like this for live stereo so that wouldn't be a problem

Re: Stereo rig with two of the same amps

After testing around over night some time I got the perfect setting for me.

Guitar->MS-3->IRT Studio->Send->TC Electronic Mimiq Doubler (lend from a friend)->Return of the IRT Studio ->Torpedo
->old Power amp I found on a musician yards sale yesterday->Torpedo

I also tested it with 2 IRT Studios and the TCE Mimiq at my luthiers workshop (didn't know he had one till I told him about the stereo idea) and it worked. But the setting I descibed above is much cheaper and is even lighter.

Re: Stereo rig with two of the same amps

I suggest you also try one of the AMT Electroncs preamps. There are single channel, two channel and even 3 channel in a pedal format. Also, check out the ISP Stealth stereo power amp for guitar. Both preamp and poweramp can be put in a pedalboard and just plug into a couple of real guitar cabs. I am pending to buy my second cab this year to start playing in stereo.
