Oritey, where to begin

lately ive been sieving through my dads VAST Prog collection and I really got into Genesis. My dad has all of the albums he did with genesis as well as some solo stuff, and i just wanted to ask, does anyone else reckon he's just awesome!? he's got such knowledge of chord structure and all that (well thats what it sounds like), and his lead playing is just beautiful, that singing tone he gets,

I know hes primarily a Les Paul man, and something to do with a 50watt plexi

I only put that last point in so its in the right place,
this is more a topic to just discuss him and his playing =)

Re: Steve Hackett

I remember i used to have an album called GTR which also had steve howe on it and while steve howe played well as always, Hacketts playing had a real fire to it. What little early Genesis i heard i really liked. "The lamb lies down on broadway". I love prog and What fusion i have been exposed to. Cool thread. excellent guitarist. Also i have heard him talking about using tapping in Genesis' stuff.

Re: Steve Hackett

yeah, he uses taps and sweeps in 1973's Selling England by the Pound (more specifically "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight")
probably my favourite Genesis album.

Re: Steve Hackett

i like a lot of Genesis early stuff... Hacket is a great player....

i go and see a theatric recreation of Genesis early shows done by a group called The Musical Box... these Canadian guys have played all over Europe and here in Toronto they sell out Massey Hall.. The real band has loaned them some stage props and plans to build the old sets.... plus Hacket and Collins has jammed with them on stage before.. I love Musical Box's stage show of Selling England the best.... their Lamb show is quite excellent but i prefer the England shows... The Musical Box tracked down most of the period correct musical instruments or had them custom made

until i really started to listen close to Genesis i did realize how much i though Hackets playing was keyboards before... he has lots of neat effects in his old rig... the gold top and the Hiwatt 50 watt stack combined with all his custom pedal board made some interesting noises and sounds.... EBOW delite at times too

Yes, I am a child of the late 70's and early 80's. I love progressive/art rock ( along with many genre's of that time.)

Enjoy!

Re: Steve Hackett

Steve Hackett is absolutely awesome.

His solo on Firth of Fifth is sick, sick, sick. It gives me those chills. And his writing skills are phenomenal.

Check this live take of "The Knife" with Hackett on it. Remember he didn't write or play the original song!

Too bad it's only the second half of the song!

Re: Steve Hackett

Yeah the only reason i don't have the album is i got hard up for money and had to sell some cds. "WHen the heart rules the mind" was the single from it and the song called "the hunter" was an excellent song as well. Just happened to be driving one day and heard the 1st song i mentioned and was like wow and went and found the album and was pleased to find out who was on it.

Re: Steve Hackett

yes firth of fifth is a MONSTER solo!!
I love the whole "paradise" setting that he solo's in in that song, the drumming is just superb

hah 2 of the greatest prog guitarists ever are called Steve.

Re: Steve Hackett

WE need to get some more prog threads going as i really love this style of music and have been influenced very much by it and it seems likely i'm not alone! When i was just a keyboardist i found it very inspiring that in prog the keyboardists got to lay down some solos that were just as smokin as many of the guitar solos. Still love Prog-metal as well!

Stands to reason though that i would end up playing guitar because i sounded a lot like a guitarist going nuts. Did a one off once and it sounded like dreamtheater meets sacth/vanhalen. Thing is since i don't play keyboards as much i am no where near what i was back then but since i know some music theory and understand scale/ chord relationships i am better with chords on it now. Its just that i am so into guitar now and it was guy i used to write with that pushed me to play the guitar because he though i was creative on it. JUST RAMBLIN A BIT!

Re: Steve Hackett

hah, yeah at school we use keyboards to record stuff, and I feel so limited, cause it takes me so much longer to figure out what im doing as opposed to playing on guitar
