Steve's Special bridge opinion?

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

very clean and articulate but that can also be = DULL/FLAT to some.
The idea behind it was to reduce mids from a amp like a mesa boogie.
John from dream theater was using a tone zone but wanted less harsh mids and the ability to hear all the notes in a distorted chord like a sus 9th with a high gain mesa amp. it is what i call a "specialty pickup" in that if those are not your goal the pu may sound very wrong for you BUT for those results i listed it is amazing!:cool2:

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

Yep, I agree w/Ed. It's an unusual pickup, and kind of the polar opposite of your namesake here...the Custom Custom. It certainly has note definition, and often works very well with drop/down tuning. However, with the reduced mids it can sound harsh in some applications. I have one. At standard tuning, my Mesa loves it, my Marshall hates it.

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

I had one for a little while, a very little while. The lack of mids and strident feel made for a pickup that I have to rank in my bottom 2 pickups of all time.

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

I have it in double-neck guitar that I built myself with a friend in high school. It has normal roughly 25" 6-string bottom neck. Top neck is roughly 28" 7-string baritone. The Steve is in the 6 string. The body is alder. I love the pickup and my Marshall loves it as well. The absence of mids gives it a nice clear almost 3D sound. Amazing note definition even with high gain. I'm also a big Petrucci fan but this pickup is definitely special things and may not be everybody's cup of tea. I'ts not teh meanest sounding pickup but it's got good power and unique sound.

Nice review, thanks a lot!

To be honest it doesnt seem like the pu for me.

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

If your into prog metal Like I am you want something to smack you in the face.

Scooping your mids isn't gonna do that. In the world of keyboards, Hammond patches, Bassist, drummers.

Scooped pups aren't what you want.

Im into hard rock and classic rock, but i completely agree with what you say.

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

Is that the pickup in the Music Man Steve Morse model?

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

Their EQ shows it scooped, but I didn't find it scooped. I used to have one and I really liked it, got rid of it for a Tone Zone and was not quite as happy with that.

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

I have a Steve's Special, honestly, it gives me similar results to a Full Shred - just Dimarzio flavored. Hot enough, but very defined.

My experience was that he Steve's Special had a lot more bass and output compared to a Full Shred. The SS was a bit clearer sounding when strumming chords under distortion.

Full Shred was noticably tighter though and more articulate at lower tunings with more mid grit.

And for lead playing?

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

Steve's Special is one of those pickups that won't ever be leaving my hands. I've got it in a basswood Strat and it just kills.

Re: Steve's Special bridge opinion?

I thought it was named after Steve Vai.

NOPE, steve blucher the main designer part owner of dimarzio inc.

The Steve's Special was clean and articulate for leads. Pinch harmonics were remarkably easy and sustained a long time.
Furthermore, the SS split nicely and had a nice clean tone. Especially for a high output ceramic.
The SS also gives you a different sound depending on how you install it. Installing it backwards will give a bassier sound.
