Famously, Clapton uses an onboard active midrange booster. To varying degrees, it is use most of the time.

The other essential ingredient in EC's Cream Reunion sound is a rather expensive 6L6-powered amplifier. (This is not necessarily better than your Vox but the overdrive characteristics are different.)

I'm quite fond of the boost, looking to put it into my new strat.
