Stew Mac pickups - Any good?

A friend at work is thinking about buying the StewMac Overwound Humbucker set, and I wondered what everybody thinks of them.

P.S. I'm telling him to buy a used JB/59 combo.

Re: Stew Mac pickups - Any good?

they actually arent bad at all. if he wants the type of 59/JB then id go for a regular in the neck and an overwound in the bridge.

Are they worth the money...yes, especially if you find em second hand
Are they an upgrade from stock imports...yes
Are they as good as duncans...no

Re: Stew Mac pickups - Any good?

are we referring to the "Golden Age" humbuckers? I've always wondered how good those were.....

Do they sound anything like a usual good PAF-type vintage tone?

Re: Stew Mac pickups - Any good?

Thanks, Scottish. That confirms what I was thinking. Zoso - yes, we're talking about the Golden Age pickups.

Anybody else try them?

I'm interested in this too...

Just for curiosity. I love buying Duncans both new and used personally because they just plain sound good.

I have a set of premium Alnico boutique GFS single coils and would not hesitate to use them either because they really impress me. My buddy uses all GFS pups and he really likes them (what can I say they do sound great, either that or my buddy is just really really good).

However we both have stumbled over the Stew Mac pups page in their catalog and kicked around the idea of trying them because it's Stew Mac... it's gotta be pretty decent.

All I'm sayin is I'd try em. Hell I'd try some of the pickups some of these forum bros make in a heartbeat too if I had more money/guitars!!

Re: Stew Mac pickups - Any good?

i used them for a while before i upgraded to a aph2n/59b combo and i was very satisfied with them. i was using a set of the normal wound ones. i put a set of the overwound ones in another guitar and the neck was way to dark and undefined under a little gain.

Re: Stew Mac pickups - Any good?

I've made a S/S/S Strat using all Stew-Mac parts for a friend of mine that didn't want to take his '63 MIA Strat w/ Lindy Fralins on the road anymore, 'cause its market value, so we used that as a reference point, soundwise.

I've used the #5425 Set of 3 (#5420, 5421, 5423), with the Hot bridge (6.8k) Golden Age SC p'ups.

Well... after I put metal baseplates under those p'ups he just can't put that guitar away! It's NOT really that vintage sounding as the real thing, mind you, but for the music style he plays I'd say that's even more adequate than the real Strat.

The Fralins are more airy sounding and complex, so for country or Dire Straits are better, but for Rock, Blues, Texan suffle and slide I like the Golden Age p'ups better. He says that his SRV licks never sounded better!

I really think the metal baseplate under the SC p'ups made the difference in the sound, and to try'em is not an expensive affaire, mind you!
