Sticky Neck

Hi guys,
Just looking for some tips to make the back of the neck on my Epi LP Custom smoother.
Has the original factory finish on it and it's becoming an issue when playing that my hand keeps sticking to the neck when sliding, I know wear and tear smoothes them over time but don't want to wait that long.

Cheers

Re: Sticky Neck

Do something like this:

I use wet/dry sandpaper as the abrasive for mine--start with the lower grit and move up to the higher grit. You don't want to dig into the wood--just lightly sand.

Best of luck!

Re: Sticky Neck

Before you start sanding, try some of the Virtuoso Cleaner on the neck. Rub it in good and let it sit for about 20 minutes and then buff it off. Repeat. Then a thin coat of the Virtuoso Polish.

This worked great on my Gibson Les Pauls and 335s, but they are NCL-finished and I am assuming your Epiphone is a poly finish. So not sure it will work, but it made a big difference on my guitars. It seemed to harden the finish, and the stickiness has not returned.

And don't forget to wash your hands before you play.

Re: Sticky Neck

I just use the dark-green side of the 2in1 scotch-brites on bothersome glossy, or to redo the satin. That way I also get the sponge sides for other uses. (value$ lol)
Use it lightly and fast, and just work it horizontal (parallel the neck). The lighter you go the more times it could be redone in the future.

Re: Sticky Neck

Thanks for the replies guys, so I tried the tips from the vid....sorry boogie got to it before your reply haha and while it worked after about a hour of playing I noticed it starting to get sticky again......might try and find some of that virtuoso cleaner rub it back then clean it and then polish it??

I would recommend starting with a

1. Lightly Sand with harsh grit (lower 100's)
2. Wipe down with a very lightly damp cloth/rag
3. Run hands up and down neck to feel any uneven spots
4. Repeat 1-3 using higher/finer grit until you've used the highest grit you have
5. Wipe down with a TINY amount of oil such as Linseed/Lemon oil (a little goes a long way)
6. Lightly sand neck one more time using the highest grit/finest grain

This method is what I do to all of my electrics, works like a charm. Also, don't just go back and forth when you are sanding–use a circular motion and be sure to remember than you are sanding a curved object and not something flat.

And as BoogieBill said, good idea to wash your hands before you pick up a guitar ;)

Re: Sticky Neck

Steel wool should do it. Just make sure to cover your pickups before working with it. The falloff always seems to find its way to your pickup magnets, where it becomes annoying to remove.
