Re: stingray appreciation

I just got a Sweetwater flier in the mail last week. In it, there was an announcement that they are now a MM distributor. Along with a couple guitars, the announcement was illustrated with a picture of a green sparkle Stingray. Awesome! I told my son, "If I played bass, that's what I would play".

My son would love a Stingray to complement his P-Bass, but only the Sterling by Music Man imports are in his price range. SBMM instruments are REALLY hard to find and try out. I think Fender intentionally pushes them out of the big-box stores. I rarely see SBMM Stingrays in Guitar Center, and never more than one per store. If you have $1200-$1500 to spend, they usually have several full-on MM versions.

Re: stingray appreciation

Good choice. IMO, the model with the traditional dual coil pickup plus a single coil pickup nearer the neck and some clever coil switching would be an even better choice.

Re: stingray appreciation

So many legend players have used these. But I've never liked the 3+1 tuning gears. And the one pickup placement doesn't seem to be in my favorite sweet spot. It's probably me, not them huh. I personally love the BIG AL bass.

I bought a SUB SBMM Ray5. Great bass. It's got a 2 band active EQ and a solid hardrock maple neck. If he wants a Stingray, I'd get that for $299.99 and when he can afford a full-on MM get it. The SUB line is usually prevelant in all the Guitar Centers I've been to. I played one right off the shelf and didn't have to do really anything to it, other than a string change.

Re: stingray appreciation

I had one briefly but I traded it in for a LP.
I also love my special Bongo 4 string...its perfect for me...I tune it to BEAD...with the low 4 strings from a 5 string bass...good fir modern metal stuff...not so good on vintage crap.

Re: stingray appreciation

I learned Music on a '77 Stingray that was factory retrofitted with a fretless Sabre neck. GREAT instrument! In fact, I still have it, though I don't really like fretless much any more.

Re: stingray appreciation

I'll take this one. Always liked the white body/pearl pickguard/maple board/matching headstock combo, tho I would've picked a white pickup too, I think.

Well, my thinking isn't as much to match the pickguard, but with the rest of the instrument being so bright, the pickup kind of hogs the attention.
If the body was black, blue, red or any "darker" color, the black pickup would be fine.

Re: stingray appreciation

The black part of an EBMM dual coil pickup is just a plastic cover over the two big single coil bobbins. Replacement plastic covers can be purchased.

Re: stingray appreciation

Am I the only one who thinks that a plain H stingray lacks a bit of deep bass?

Re: stingray appreciation

Which EXACT version of single pickup Stingray?

I find that the different versions of the bridge assembly affect the overall tone. The two-band and three-band EQ networks seem to sound different too. I certainly noticed a change in my low E string after I fitted a Hipshot Detuner. I decided that the extended range was worth the compromise. As the device wears out, I may decide to reinstate the stock head.
