Stingray arrived today!

I've been on a bit of a spending spree lately, and after a band pracitce a few weeks ago I decided my back up bass, a Geddy Lee sig Jazz bass wasn't cutting it anymore. So to the internet marketplaces I went, searching for something more agressive, lighter (Geddy weighs a ton), and something a little different.

I ended up with a 100% mint 2004 Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray. It's transparent gold over ash with a maple neck and fretboard. It has the 3 band active EQ and a fancy tortoise 'guard. I got a great deal on it, especially considering the condition the bass is in. It looks pretty much untouched, without so much as a bit of light hazing on the back.

It plays great. The fit, finish, and overall quality on this bass is outstanding. I've never had an EB before, and now I'm sold on them. This is in the same league as my G&L and in some respects, better. This is my first wide, thick Precis-sized neck, but it still plays effortlessly. I think EB finishes their necks with a wax and nothing more. Whatever it is, it's fast and smooth.

The horror stories I've heard about 10+ pound Stingrays don't apply to this bass. It's in on the lighter side of 7-8 pounds.

Here are some pics, they're large, so beware:

That's a sweet looking bass! Wow - I wouldn't think I'd go for that color, but it really works here. Awsome find!

Re: Stingray arrived today!

Me neither, at first! I was just happy I found one that wasn't Guitar Center black. :D

Re: Stingray arrived today!

Great bass. I like that color because it goes with any color that a guitarist or drummer will have.

Not in the same class, but my last purchase was an early 5 string OLP that looks almost exactly like your MM for $200.....maple neck and amber ash body. I bought it because it already had a Basslines active pickup and some fretwork, bringing it closer to the quality of a MM. I'd much rather have yours though, but I just bought mine for recording.

Unless your #1 is much better, I could easily see that one becoming your main player. MM's rule.

ah, stingrays...I love them...here is mine :)

I kinda wish I had gotten the 4 string now, but it's all good!

Re: Stingray arrived today!

I think I'll alternate between the G&L and the MM as my primary, depending on the situation. It's hard to decide which one to relegate to "backup" status when both are awesome axes!

I'm...starting...to...dislike...you...

I want a Stingray too, very badly. A fivestring for me though, and preferably finished in natural or in transparent orange with matching headstock, either one with a maple board and black or tortoise pickguard. And I will own one, too, in the not-too-distant future :fingersx:

Re: Stingray arrived today!

looks nice, solid and simple - great bass.
i just can't get happy with the pickguard design of musicman.

Re: Stingray arrived today!

Here's the OLP I scored for $200. With the solid ash body, Basslines MM pickup with active system, and nice neck, I would have been stupid to pass it up.

Re: Stingray arrived today!

so you're better than Geddy Lee? is that what you're sayin? Man you forum dudes get smug when you get cool stuff...

jay to the kzay man, that's a sweet bass and I am just steaming jealous. The orangey hue is to DIE for.

Re: Stingray arrived today!

EB MusicMan basses are simply my favorite bass tone in the world, second to precisions and thunderbirds. Seriously, awesome score.
