STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus - ETA?

We use a device called a Helmholtz coil to calibrate each individual Stack Plus pickup for maximum hum cancellation. Normally, the only place you'll find a Helmholtz coil is in a university physics lab. Each Stack Plus gets a resistor value based on the results of the Helmholtz test. This type of testing and calibration, in addition to the unique magnetic structure of the pickup (and something called flux transfer plates), allows it to achieve extraordinarily low levels of 60-cycle hum.
.
that's fascinating! but how does it work?

I assume you use a Helmholtz coil to simulate the noise field. it's uniform because the source is far away from the pickup. the field generated by the strings are not uniform so the pickup picks up the the difference in flux passing thru two coils in the pickup. how can it sound like the flux thru one of them? the common parts in flux are cancelled, aren't they?
unless the the field generated by the strings are so non-uniform then you have to use super strong magnets to magnetize the hell out of the strings and kill the sustain?
can you say something without giving away your secret?
you must've got your patents by now.

I'm not sure I can reveal much more than I already did. I'll have to check with Kevin Beller and see if we can go into more detail about what we do to each pickup.

Actually, the patent was applied for around a year ago, but it hasn't been granted yet. Remember, Gibson applied for the humbucker patent in 1955 and it wasn't granted until 1960.

Im going to just get one for a middle position because I have a lil' 59 type PU in both neck and bridge. Do I have to do anything more like changing pots or wiring or anything or can I just put this bad boy in there?

Wow... that actually got me even more curious about magnetism. Thanks Evan!

Re: STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus - ETA?

I have heard people say the Kinmans are the best noiseless strat pickups around along with the Lace Sensors. I haven't used those but I know Lew had a buddy who uses the Kinmans say the Duncan Stack Plus is better!

I use the Fender Hot Noiseless from the Jeff Beck Model and wonder how these new Duncans compare????? Anyone??? :)

I did a fairly extensive "shootout" with the Stack + prototypes (the first ones) with a set of Kinmans as well as Lace Sensors, Vintage noiseless, Hot Noiseless, EMH's and a set of Bill Lawrence L-280, the Stack Pluses won hands down, then Lew and I made some suggestions and then they got upgraded!!! I did get a chance to try the newest Prototypes (the upgraded version) and belive me when I say that these pickups kick some serious ass! Im glad that they are finally comming out!

Thanks bro! I just wonder if I am even a strat guy. I have been thking of selling my one and only strat and sticking with humbuckers. Have you played Rio Grandes? Great pickups!
