Stk s4 Wiring issue

Hi there
I have finally changed the emgs on my ernie ball musicman Luke 2

The stks4 fitted perfectly in mid and neck, and so did the sugar ssv humbucker in the bridge.
I installed stks4 neck, stks4 mid, ssv bridge

Now the issue I have is that in position 2 of the bridge (bridge split and mid) I'm getting hum problems.
I tried splitting inner coil of the humbucker and then tried outer coil. Both ways I have hum...

I'm frustrated and can't think of any solutions.
Is it the issue that I have a stks4 mid and that it might be reverse wound and so? But if that was the issue it should have worked when I tried the other coil of the humbucker...

Please help me guys, I'm very disappointed here and really need help... Suffering here.
Thanks to all

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

are you splitting the middle pup as well? to get humcancelling in that position you will need to do that. if not you have a humbucker and a single coil which will still hum

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Thanks for your reply
I followed the diagram from Duncan web site. That one doesn't show the mid pickup splitted.
It shows the red wire tapped off, which is the one used for split.

:(

This is what I used
But disregard the push pull

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Thanks Guitar Doc.
That diagram does not split the humbucker. You can see the red and white are taped off, those are the wires to split one of the coils. You could also use red to the switch, white and bare to ground and use the black and green to split the other coil in the humbucker, which is the coil I prefer BTW as it sounds less bright.
I tried to split the mid stks4 but it sounded out of phase with the split humbucker.... I'm suffering badly.... Will get there eventually

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Ok, got the noise out almost completely.
Now the only issue remaining is that the pot wouldn't go to zero, it does. It cut audio when on zero.
Might be the pot is not properly grounded on the 3rd leg?
At least is less pai now

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Usually when the pot doesn't go all the way to zero it is a problem on the 3rd lug of the volume pot. Make sure it is grounded properly with the solder from that lug not touching the other lugs.

Ghanés so much guys, mincer i will check the 3rd lug and go from there.
The diagram you gave me now guitar doc is the right one now, only that my singles are stack, but it's still pretty much the same
Thanks for your help

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

you'll still want to spli the stack when combined with the split humbucker to get humcancelling

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Well, it looks like what you are saying is correct, as I couldn't get hum cancelling 100%, but I don't get much hum in position 2 now to be honest, I think I can live with it.
I'm afraid that if I split the mid to add to the bridge splitted as well, I might loose volume compared to the other positions of the switch, what do you think Jeremy?

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

the tone wont change much but youll lose a little hum. i might play it as it is for now and see what ya think before going any further

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Hi guys ,
Believe it or not, I only sorted the wiring issue out yesterday! Yes, it was a pain but it is sorted.
I had ground problems, everything "looked" ok so it was hard to realise what was the issue.
I think it mainly was:
1. although the ground connection looked alright, it was actually lifted from the pot carcass, looked embedded in solder, but not really touching the pot. I think it lifted a bit when the solder was cooling and hardening.

Then the issue of the volume pot it was something strange . I have soldered many guitars before and this is the first time I do this and it doesn't work properly. I threaded one of the ground cables (the one from the ground pot) through the hole of the third lug of the volume pot to ground it, then solder this to the pot back. Then other two ground wires (for the jack and the body). This didn't work for some very special reason that I don't understand.
I ended up soldering these 3 grounds together to the back of the volume pot and pulling the third lug of the pot back to almost touching the pot carcass, then I dropped some solder to make it do contact. Magic, now it worked... .??? I have threaded ground cables through the third lug many many many times and this is the only time that it has not worked, anyway. Happy days now, the guitar is noise cancelling in ALL positions and has a volume control that works properly.

Loving my ernie ball music man Luke II with passive pickups more than before!
My best guitar. Period

Thanks to all of you that helped me.

I thought I would tell you I succeeded eventually
;)

Re: Stk s4 Wiring issue

Ahhh and I didn't have to split the stks4 in the mid bridge position. It is hum cancelling with the split humbucker inner coil, inner being the coil closer to the neck, for a warmer sound.
