stock Pearly Gates or Custom shop model

Rumbling

New member
Need some advice regarding a neck pup for my Les Paul Custom. I am planning on swapping out the stock 490/498 with a PG neck and a Custom Custom bridge. I play mostly blues based rock, hard rock, southern rock, etc. thru a Phaez amp with alot of gain on tap. My question is this...would I be better served ordering a custom shop Pearly Gates neck or just going with the stock version? Im not worried about what the bobbins are made of etc. I am just wondering tonally if one version is different than the other? I can buy the covered PG for $112 and the CS is $160. I will also have to solder a cover on the Custom Custom since its a LPC you gotta keep the bling : )

Any and all input is appreciated.
Thanks!
Michael

I see no reason to NOT go with the regular PG.

Unless there is some specific tonal concern you have.

I played in a band doing exactly that kind of music with that pup combo (fairly bright Epi LP classic) and it was fantastic!

Clapton, Zepplin, Skynrd, Allmans - it was my go to guitar.

The CC can be a particular pickup, but there is a ton of advice for working with it on here. I really found the fat top, blasting miss, and loose bass really just worked in so many ways for those sounds.

I have the pgn and cc in my explorer, and I love it. Both are uncovered tho. Supposedly, the covers take a bit of bite away, not sure. But the main point is, those 2 pups go really well together

Thanks for the quick replies. Any issues with covering the Custom Custom? I wouldnt pot it...probably just slip the cover on. Usually they fit tight enough to stay on. Thats really my only option for a covered Custom Custom isnt it?

Thanks!

Re: stock Pearly Gates or Custom shop model

The stock PGn is my favorite Duncan neck humbucker.

But that said, IMO, it might be worth it to get one wound by MJ or Seymour because everything they've wound for me has sounded just a little better than the stock version.

Not that there's anything wrong with the stock version - it's still a great pickup.

But there's something about those Custom Shop pickups. ;)

My chops don't actually warrant getting a stock pickup….

That said I have a Bridge Pearly that is wound to 9k

First off, you can order the Custom Custom with a cover. No need to put one on yourself.

As for CS PG vs. regular PG, I see no reason whatsoever to purchase the CS one.

Have you tried both?

Or have you tried a stock anything and then tried the Custom Shop version?

Might be the reason you "see no reason whatsoever..." :)

I have to agree with Itsa there. Why WOULDN'T a CS PG be the same as a floor PG? Other than the CS cache, I suspect they would build a PG just like every other PG and charge 160 for the time. Maybe a little extra QA or something.

That said, I have never order a CS model. But unless I wanted some aspect Custom, I wouldn't…

BTW I though Dimarzio had the double cream look trademarked and Duncan would not produce a double creame without covers?

(This was posted by Kojak over on the LP forum)
The difference is that THEY'RE NOT PRODUCTION, they're made to specs for a customer, so they're hand-made wound by most probably Maricela Juarez aka "The Mojo Queen" or even by Seymour himself. That's how they can produce a double-creme without having Larry breathing'em down the neck.

Re: stock Pearly Gates or Custom shop model

the thing is that a normal pearly gates is wound on the green monster. i would assume that a custom shop pg would also be wound on the green monster. they dont usually hand guide humbuckers, even in the cs.
