Re: STOMPBOXES!

It ultimately depends on your tonal wants and needs, but a great preamp with DI capabilities and a nice gain stage is the Aguilar Tone Hammer. The bonus - for me - is that it can run on phantom power as well, so when you're using it as a DI into the FOH board, it'll power it for you (otherwise, get the 18v adaptor).

Anything else is really secondary. I use all the Pigtronix Bass effects as they work extremely well and sound great, as well as the bass offerings from Creation Audio. Lots of the "big name" pedals are good too, with varying levels of success on bass, and I've used a number of them but keep going back to the main two listed.

The Dunlop one has phantom power too which is fantastic.

I agree with what someone else said that the main effect you need for bass is a good distortion of some kind. Especially for metal.

Re: STOMPBOXES!

I really like using my BBE Sonic stomp for bass. it's like,..... if I turned my bass knob on my amp up all the way, and that's 10, that's like a 5 on the sonic stomp's lo contour knob. really, it's just a nice 2-band EQ that can boost your highs and lows in a natural way, as long as you don't use too much of it.

Re: STOMPBOXES!

oh, and overdrive's nice, but i personally use an MXR bass fuzz deluxe. i like the grind i can get out of it, and the fact that it's got separate wet and dry blend knobs.

I usually prefer fuzz on bass over overdrive as well. Fuzzes tend to keep a boost on the bass frequencies.
