Stop the noise by mixing???

HI,

I have a strat with 2 x Di-Marzio SH3 Malmsteen pickups at neck & middle and my SSL-3 pup at the bridge - depending on the stage/location I get bad noise/hum with just the SSL-3 . I want to kill the noise and I have a few original Fender pickups laying in a drawer - I was wondering if there is a way of mixing the SSL-3 wires to a dummy Fender pup (to get noise cancelling) which I could hide somewhere? I would even break a Fender one into pieces up if that would help...

Or could I tap into the wiring of the middle Di-Marzio just to get hum cancelling and yet not have it working simultaneously? Like add it, but then deliberately break the duo's circuit with on/off switch?

Any ideas?

Hi Guys,

maybe I did not explain this too well - here is the statement made by Seymour-D about a Fender Strat single coil pickup in the middle position with a Seymour-D pup on the outside (bridge or neck):-

"If the both the magnet and the electrical phase of the middle pup are opposite to the outer pup then the 2 pups will work with each other and there will be hum-cancelling in this position“.

So, in theory I could make my own hum-canceller! I take the 2 pups, wire them in parallel and physically hide the Fender one under the outer one – Hey presto! A stack! - however I have an issue with space and the good sound of the outer pup will be affected even though the middle one is hidden away from any strings.

So, taking that further why can't I break up an old Fender pup, take all but one magnet out and wrap a few windings round it and hide it under the outer pickup (it will never get near the strings or pick up a single to change the sound of the main bridge pup - but it will be a ‘stack’ and give me hum-cancelling.

So what do you think? Any point in me trying this out?.

Don't try to patent it though 'cos it's already been done. The Fender Elite used a similar system and Bartolini bass pickups use a non magnetic "passenger" coil so that when you coil tap them you actually switch out the "partner' coil and switch in the "passenger" (my terminology, not Bartolini's, I might add).

One other thing; you'll gett a truer single coil sound if you wire it in parallel as in series (which is more efficient at noise cancelling) it will take out some of the high end. Whether sreies or parallel you will notice a change in the tone though. The Elite had a buffer circuit (which incorporated an onboard compression circuit) which detected the noise and fed it back into the circuit to suppress noise without affecting the resonant characteristics of the pickups.
