I have tried endlessly to try and figure this out.. but I can never find out the info for his pups. I think that he may be using stock pups and all the sound comes from the processors he runs through. I've used a JB and gotten away with a close replica of the tone from Sex Type Thing

dude... I've been looking, I've heard some good STP tones from a JB, but it really lies in low output pickups (try a 59)

Dean Deleo is a strange dude when it comes to guitars. He is really a Tele/single coil guy, and he uses Vox amps primarily. However, on tour is is regularly seen with a Gibson Les Paul.
I recorded a version of Plush, and of Interstate Love Song. I used my Dean Hardtail, which is a PRS type guitar, with the JB in the bridge. It captured the vibe pretty well. The amp was my Boss GT-6, and I used the 1959 Marshall patch, with the gain up pretty good, expecially on Plush, and the mids really boosted to fatten it up. Just a touch of chorus and delay on Plush also, to give it that slightly wierd sound.

Dean Deleo is a strange dude when it comes to guitars. He is really a Tele/single coil guy, and he uses Vox amps primarily. However, on tour is is regularly seen with a Gibson Les Paul.
I recorded a version of Plush, and of Interstate Love Song. I used my Dean Hardtail, which is a PRS type guitar, with the JB in the bridge. It captured the vibe pretty well. chorus is a big part, yes
dean's got great taste in guitars... most of tiny music was recorded using a p90 special les paul, as for amps he usually goes into vox head to marshall 4x12. He also occasionally uses a Guild Thunderbird from what I hear (a really cool guitar)
The problem with the STP sound is getting gain, chimeyness, and clarity.

I am lucky enough to have gotten to meet both Brenden O'Brain as well as Dean! Dean has a 56 LP Jr, which is stock several 60's Telecasters which are stock, and several 70's LP's which are...stock. As for amps he will use and does use everything under the sun in the studio, but live it's been the same rig since before STP...Vox AC-30 and then a VHT Power amp with a rack mount tube preamp, and a very small pedal board.

I've seen videos of STP recording their first album.
I recall a cherryburst LP Standard with stock pickups for the Core Album. I think MOST of the tone is coming from his botique, custom made pre-amp, made by Demeter.
The guitar sound on this album is perhaps the MOST processed it's ever been...sounds like some chorus going on, very saturated. The album sounds fantastic though. Brendan OBrien is the man. The bass sounds huge on that album, and plays a big part in the overall sound.
The next album, Purple, he used a LP junior with P90s. Listen to Interstate, and that's SO P90ish.
The album after that, tiny Music, he used the LP junior and a telecaster. Listen to tumble in the rough, Lady Picture show...Tele all the way.
His main, main amp for a while has been a Demeter preamp, through some sort of poweramp, thru marshall 4x12s.
I remember him saying in an interview about their last album, that his tone is a combo of Vox and Demeter.

i just saw SNL with STP and he was playin a sunburst gibson les paul (not sure what one) with the stock pups it looks like. i saw marshall cabs behind him and i saw a rack on the far lest of the stage behind the bassist. i swear i saw one of those marshal JMP rack unit things. well anywho he also used a wah and i could tell he had some delay on there.

On Interstate Love Song he used a Tele and a Les Paul. For some of the jazzy tracks like And So I Know... he'll use a hollowbody Gibson with a single P-90 in the neck.
