Straightreplacement tuner for LP?

Hey Guys,

I want to replace the original kluson type gibson tuner of '96 Les Paul Studio, partly for aesthetic reason and partly because one of the tuners took a bad hit on the head and has not been the same since.

I am thinking of getting some Grover locking Rotomatics but I don't want to have to enlarge the stud holes or re-drill holes for the screws.

Would they be straight replacement or will they need a bit of work to fit? If they do I'll probably just pass.

I found specs for the rotos but not for the original gibson ones and I don't have accurate enough measuring tools to make the comparison.

Grovers need a larger hole, 10mm as opposed to 8mm., and the positioning screws will also have to be redrilled.

Unfortunately, the same applies to just about every enclosed tuner on the market. One with a smaller shaft may be slipping my mind but I can´t think of a single case where you won´t have to drill for the positioning screws.

Essentially the only mod free replacement for stamped Klusons are stamped Klusons and their copies. But these are also available in locking variants for the most part.

Why locking tuners? Never really felt the need for that on an LP. Try the Tone Pros Klusons. Should be much better and a direct replacement.

They're a straight "no-mod" replacement for your klusons. I'm thinking of changing mine on my classic, the plastic knob's slipping on one. Metal should work better. Other than that I have no complaint against my klusons, hence the fact that I'm considering other klusons to replace 'em...

I just thought I'll give it a try, see if it would improve tuning stability which is ok but not great on the Studio.

Nonetheless, the main thing was not so much getting locking tuner than getting rid of these ugly klusons. Never liked them to be honest. But then if it means butchering the headstock, I'll just have to leave with them. sigh. I know myself, it won't end well. And I am not paying someone to do it. Ho well!

+1 on the tonepros/klusons ...i have a set....they are of exactly the same dimensions & look the same but are sealed, smoother and stable! ...they come in either press-in or threaded bushings depending on the gibson...

I know exactly how you feel thinking those tuners are ugly. I can't actually offer any suggestions, but at least you know you're not alone.

Tuning stability is not in the tuning machines, dress the nut slots. However, nothing wrong with replacing parts if it makes you like your guitar more. Pings are a cheaper alternative, they have the chrome keystone keys and a single screw that lines up with either of the Kluson's holes.
