strange jack

I kind of like this Mexican strat on my local craigslist, but I'm not crazy about this funky type input jack. What the hell is it? Anyone know? Is It something that can be taken off and the original style be put back without cosmetic issues?

Re: strange jack

How is that fastened? Any screw holes required near its edge would be exposed after reverting to a normal recessed jack socket plate.

Also, why does an MIM Fender Stratocaster have a screwed-in humbucker mounting surround?

Offset fret position markers? Very dodgy!

Re: strange jack

wow. that is weird. Hopefully it's just sitting on top of the wood and the normal jack route is underneath

Re: strange jack

It looks like there's at least 1 screw around where the bottom of the original jackplate would be. So maybe there's hope for it. If someone offered it to me, I'd probably take it.

Re: strange jack

Actually, it's an output jack, not an input jack. Sorry if I'm being a dick but it's beyond my reason why you'd choose to ask a bunch of strangers on a message board instead of undoing those two screws holding that huge piece of wtf and finding out whatever hides underneath. Please don't take offense but how the **** are we supposed to know?

Ummm dude he doesnt have the guitar its on craigs list... Grats on not reading his post and coming off as a jerk

Re: strange jack

No offense taken my man, but I haven't seen this guitar in person yet. As my original question asked, does anyone know what it is? As in, maybe someone on here has come across one of these before.... As I hadn't., and it seems you haven't either.

And yes, output Jack....that was my bad.

Re: strange jack

Even I'll admit, that's a new one on me. I'd personally like to see more of that guitar in person. Just to figure out what exactly was done to it.

Is that the bell you call a waiter with?

Or an old fashioned door buzzer?

Or a light switch from the 1940's?

Or a television cable outlet from the 1970's?

Whatever it is, it doesn't belong on a guitar.

Re: strange jack

Sorry for the brainfart, I was raving :smack:

Regardless of where the funky jackplate came from, you might want to unscrew it and check for damage underneath.

Re: strange jack

Swampy I'd say keep away. If the seller cared so much about selling this, he should have reverted it back to stock.

Re: strange jack

There are too many other cool guitars out there to fiddle with that, uh, "project." I have no idea what that boob is doing over the output jack, but the only think that I can think of is that it is there to hide some damage.

I'd pass on that guitar.

Re: strange jack

$280 for an MIM with a hardshell and a spare neck and loaded pickguard? Not a bad deal, even if it does have a few extra screw holes.

Re: strange jack

I contacted the guy last night, he said he he's the original jack, but there would be two small holes shown when changed back. Might not be a deal breaker. Its been listed for two weeks, I may offer him $250. If anyone needs a steel breast-pump cap , I may have one for ya soon.
