Can anyone explain this one to me? It seems to have a tremolo bar, yet there doesn't seem to be any back routing

Re: Strange strat

hmm this I have no explanation for. I googled but found nothing. Ill be watching to see if someone can explain whats going on here. def has my attention.

Re: Strange strat

Wanna say it's an '80's model, just can't recall which one specifically.

I "vaguely" remember the top-mount trems, sure someone can elaborate further,tho...

Re: Strange strat

Yup - an 80's MIJ, IIRC.

Sent from my iPad using a bunch of electrons, copper, and probably some fiber optic cable

Re: Strange strat

Owner says it's an 83, but I'm more curious as to how it works.

Re: Strange strat

Not MIJ. This is an 83/84 "Freeflyte" Standard Stratocaster, made in the US. Note, two knobs, and the input jack.

Very similar bridge to the (also front route) Elite/System 2 and System 3 trem on Japanese contemporary Strats. But what you've posted is one of the most maligned "cost-cutter" Fenders CBS ever made.

All those trems can work well, but parts are difficult to find.

Yes, this is an 1983 US Standard. No back routing or football jack plate. My friend had one. The changes are universally hated, and the trem system was terrible. An interesting curiosity, as Fender were cutting costs at the time, but not making better guitars.

Re: Strange strat

No, definitely not Japanese, this is absolutely a US, two-knob Strat.

No Japanese guitars were spec'd like this, but as I mentioned some had a trem design that operated on an identical principal. The closest guitar to this that Fender Japan marketed would be a later Strat Elite (earliest were US-made,) which still would have had a full three knobs with side-jack, and a smoothed over version of the same trem, along with numerous other differences from this, and other "normal" Strats.

Re: Strange strat

Had the exact same model '83 Sienna sunburst with maple neck. The trem has notches for the ball of the strings to sit in. This is when Fender was having a identity crisis with Charvel.
