Strap button placement on sg's?

Would u know where the strap button is usually placed because on a lot of them I have seen it on the back of the guitar rather than on the side (like on lespauls and strats) I find having it on the back can make the strap twist pretty easily and make playing a bit less comfortable. Does anyone know why they make sg’s with the strap in this position.

Re: Strap button placement on sg's?

I just assumed that it was because there is less wood for the screw to hold on to and it might become unstable... Just a guess though... I've not had too much trouble with mine, especially after I made my own little straplocks with washers.

The Tony Iommi has it on the side. Im gonna be making my own SG and Im considering putting it on the side aswel. Not sure though. I cant find an Iommi SG near me to see what it looks like in person but Ive seen the ESP Viper which is almost the same with the Iommi strap button placement and I dont like it. Ill prob just put in strap locks and a normal placement

Re: Strap button placement on sg's?

The reason why the strap button on some SG's are on the back rather than the side is it gives you a much greater amount of area to determine the best place to find a balance point. SG's are not very well balanced, they can be a pain constantly slipping down. I put Grover tuning machines in mine 20 years ago, and it made the guitar really want to slide. I solved it by using a 100% all leather strap. Many people prefer to move the buttons to find a better balance.

never had a problem with mine being on the back... i have to be carefull not to bend forward without holding the guitar.. but who does bend forward on purpose eh ;)

ya ive played sg's before and im not a big fan of that sort of strap button placement. Same applies to any guitar with that similiarity es, and flying v's included.

Thats what I did, plus a 3" leather strap is very comfortable. And I like the button better on the back rather than on the horn.

The strap button on my 67' Melodymaker(SG Style) is on the back. Looks to
be stock from Gibson ?? I had a big problem with my Firebird, A 3inch strap
didn't cut it. I had to do the nessasary evil and relocate the button to
the back of the body. :saeek: I hated the Idea of doing any mod to a
vintage/collectable guitar,But it was unplayable.Gibson really droped the
ball where they put that button. I checked pics of Johnny Winter and
Allen Collens and Claptons (Cream Era) Birds and noticed they all relocated there buttons. So I guess there's no other way?
