Hi all,

I am planning on building a Strat and am going to use 2 singles and a humbucker in the neck.

Any suggestions on what combination to use . I want a classic rock/blues tone.

Thanks

Greg

What woods are you going to use? How will the neck be fastened, screws, glue or through?

Re: Strat 2 Sjingle and 1 Humbucker

One of these sets would get you a long way I think:

1) APH-1b Alnico II humbucker at the bridge, and APS-1 Alnico II single coils in neck and middle (middle being RW-RP)

2) TB-5 Custom humbucker at the bridge, and the SSL-5 Custom Staggered single coil in mid and neck.

3) PATB-1 or PATB-3 Parallel Axis Trembucker Original or Saraceno signature in the bridge, with SCR-1 Cool Rails in neck and middle position.

These three sets would all give you very pleasant results in my opinion, the first set is the most classic, and most conservative/pure vintage one. The second set is vintage orientated, but more "balls to the wall", more output overal, and a beefier sound in all positions, while retaining some vintage vibe (think "overwound sound"). Third set is the most modern one in technology, but still sounds vintage for sure, the Cool Rails that are used in that set, are hum canceling too, and can be another advantage. These could also be used in combination with the TB-5 Custom if you want to go hum-cancelling with those two single coil slots.

Good luck with it and keep us informed! ;-)

Wait a minute!

You said you are planning on having the humbucker in the NECK position, not the BRIDGE position??

Re: Strat 2 Sjingle and 1 Humbucker

Yes thats right,The humbucker will be in the neck pos

Thank

Greg

Ahhhh, that throws my above theory overboard haha, but I should have asked first, since it's clearly mentioned! hehe

Well an APH-1 Alnico II Pro humbucker for the neck would defenitely be a good choice I think, I would not doubt myself to put it in the neck of any ash guitar.

For the bridge single coil I would defenitely go for a rail type humbucker in single coil size, making sure it has enough output to balance with a full size vintage bucker at the neck. The bridge single coil is the hardest choice in my opinion.

Re: Strat 2 Sjingle and 1 Humbucker

Would you like to maintain the classic Strat single coil bridge sound or would you like something beefier in there, like a single-sized humbucker?

What kind of music do you play and what kind of sound are you looking to achieve?

The APH in the neck sounds like a good choice but you should also consider a '59n. The mids can be a little scooped but I've used it in the neck position of a Strat before with great success.

Re: Strat 2 Sjingle and 1 Humbucker

Any particular reason for such a choice?

I mean, having singles in bridge and middle, and a HB in the neck is hardly common. No?

Are you intending this guitar for slide? Then, it'd make sense to me... Not that it does not make any sense at all. It's gotta, and that's why you are asking. I simply would like to learn why, you know...

Thanks Guys for you replies.

The only reason I was going for that configuration was that I already had the pick guard, but after weighing this all up,and the great advise offered here,I will get another pick guard.

Re: Strat 2 Sjingle and 1 Humbucker

It's not impossible to make a unique guitar work, but it tends to work best if you know what you want out of it.

A hot single coil pickup is a very good idea, unless you like the incredibly bright sound of a low output strat bridge. Some like that. Far from all, though. And many listeners don't...

Now, a hot bridge single coil can be interesting, and isn't something used a lot. Particularly in a noise-cancelling stack.

So if you want to work with your pickguard, it's possible. But not the obvious approach.

I don't understand why more strat players don't insist on a reverse slant in the bridge pickup, like certain famous lefty guitarists wound up with by stringing the guitar backwards...
