Strat: A2 Neck A5 Middle and Bridge

I have been playing my JV strat with a neck A2 Texas Hot, and the middle and bridge are still the stock JV's Tex Mex's with A5's. This is beginning to develope into what I might call the best of both worlds arrangement. Nice warm bluesy neck tones and singing bright chimey bridge tones.

I have only been playing again since Feburary and this is my first strat experience. This is a really nice strat pickup arrangement. I am really enjoying it.

I just wanted to share this.

I had been planning to change the bridge to an A2 Texas Hot, but I think I may have to stick a Surfer Bridge in there instead. I don't want to lose the nice chime A5 tone in the bridge.

Do you think a Texan and Surfer could get along together OK in the same strat?

lots of people opt for surfers in neck and middle then put a texas hot in the bridge for livelier mids.

I would like to try a texas hot in my neck position. I currently have surfers.

This TH neck is really working great for me. The brighter pup in the brighter bridge position just seems like the right way to go for me. It's working for me and I think I will keep it that way. I will likely just upgrade to a premium A5 Surfer in the bridge.

Quencho, I'll bet you would love the TH in the neck of your strat. This baby was made for some bluesy, soulful vibes.

But, I'm sure that there are many good pup combo's for strats, I see why some guys have as many strats like Tiger has clubs in his golf bag. Each has a different purpose.

I can see the value of having a mid friendly Texas Hot in the bridge to tame the brightness of the strat bridge, I have always thought the TH Custom Bridge would be great. And to add a little brightness to the neck via the SSL-1 or Surfers.

You guys are turning me into a mostly clean tone, single coil, strat player. I never imagined this happening to me. I started here a the forum looking for really crunchy fat strat. You guys turned me on to the JV strat and I decided to give it a try. Then, I have heard so much raving about loud clean amps with strats, and I have been playing my HellHound that way, and I am loving my clean just at the verge of OD strat tones. This is cool.

I guess I finally let go of my hidden desire to be KK Downing, George Lynch, or Phil Collen. I am better suited to be a Jimmie Vaughan or Eric Clapton or SRV or other wanna be.

That is one reason why there are so many different kinds of pickups -- everyone has different needs and ears. Go with what works for you. I've had a couple of Strats laying around in pieces for quite some time. My other guitars have gotten more of a workout lately. I've been thinking about a new pickup setup in one of them, similar to yours -- Texas hot in the neck, surfer in the middle for those chimey quack tones, but I'm thinking the Texas custom hot in the bridge. I've never really found a Strat bridge that I like, but I'm thinking that will work.

Are you sticking with the Hellhound then?

BTW, I've become a huge Jimmie Vaughan fan, much more than SRV. His music is different than the current blues stuff out there which sounds so similar its almost indistinguishable,

I'm using a Texas Hot in Neck & Mid and a '59 in the bridge if that helps

if it works for you then roll with it, there aint no rules

there are a bunch of people that use a2 pups in the neck of a lp with an a5 pup in the bridge

That's right...whatever makes a musician comfortable so he/she quits analyzing pickups and makes music instead (that's the whole point right???) is fine! :laugh2:

That said, I'm one who prefers my Strat with alnico 5 for the neck and middle for those bright, chimey "Mark Knopfler" rythym tones and alnico 2 for the bridge pickup. Alnico 5 bridge single coils are fine, but a little to shrill and glassy sometimes for the type of singing soloing tone i like best.

I use the Surfer/Surfer/Texas Hot set in my favorite Strat.

My point in this thread is as follows;

I read a book called "blue like jazz" the author says that he never liked jazz until he saw a guy playing jazz on the sax. The player exuded a joy and pleasure while he played jazz on his sax. Seeing that enjoyment made the author like jazz for the first time.

You guys have done that for me for strats and bright chimey pickups.

I have been trying to define what I like in a strat pup. I had my theory in my head. See I've had this 80's metal thing that kept trying to cling to me.
I see all the satisfaction you guys get, and I am getting my own stratiness figured out by watching you guys believe it or not. You guys are influencing me for better or worse.

I do listen to what you say contrary to the appearance that I may put forth

The Texas Hot is such a sweet neck pup. I can't imagine anyone not liking it.

I'm thinking a warmer pup is meant for the neck position and a brighter pup is meant for the brighter bridge position. It just sounds like a logical arrangment. It's working great for me so far.
