Strat body work

This is my first post here and '91 MIM strat... it's been neglected for many years and I've recently been thinking of fixing it up somewhat.
Someone (too embarrassed to admit exactly who) made an extremely poor decision to attempt to relic it in the mid 90's. Now, I don't mind the dings and nics, but would love to remove the evidence of sandpaper. Do you more experienced folks think it's possible to remove the scratches or would a total strip and refinish (a solid color) be the easier option?

Would love some tips on removing the scratches....

Did you ever use scratch remover for your car? This is a rubbing compound with a fine cut (like Meguiar) on a polishing pad (felt or foam) with your electric drill. A cheap and dirty option for an average guitar.

Yep, but you'll probably need some medium cutting compound first. Or even a few grits of wet/dry (from maybe 800 and finer) to get rid of the worst bits. Essentially you need to sand from the same grit you made the relic effect from......sorry from 'whomever did the relicing'...of course.
