Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

I'm looking for a noiseless Strat bridge pickup (just for live shows). It would be best if it had a lead sound somewhat like the SSL-7, and could run with a 500k pot, that way it could balance with the Gibson minihumbucker in the neck. What do you suggest? Thanks for your input!

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

The new Paul Gilbert "Injector" pups are AWESOME! The mids and punch of a humbucker with much of the feel of a single coil left intact.

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

are you talking about the hot noisless fender garbage?

for 500k pots i would look at the hot stack+ itll keep up with the mini and sound good with the higher value pots

the custom shop can actually make you a qp strat stack it just wont be cheap. i had them do a sc qp p bass stack that was awesome!

Never heard a SSl-7. But I have tried both the JB JR. and Hot Rails in my Strat with 250K pots and felt both needed more treble. So maybe a JB JR. with 500K pots would be the ticket?

@jeremy: Have the Hot Stacks been re-designed? I remember having one a long time ago that was *okay*....

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

yes they have. the new stack + series sounds much more like a single coil than the old classic and hot stacks. the hot stacks actually look like strat pups too with six rod pole pieces rather than the bar.

none of these are going to sound like a noiseless ssl7 though, the oversized poles have alot to do with that sound

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

I really love the lead tone with the SSL-7, but the noise at the clubs is just awful. Just a thought, could MJ make an Antiquity Stack 7 with that same lead tone, and more *air in the sound* like a vintage piece of gear. It might be nice to cut back the output a little. (Now you've got me going gear nuts again..... and, its been a while since this has happened).

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

That will have to be a *goal* since I'm sure it will cost quite a bit (and it WOULD be worth it I'm sure). In the meantime, do you think the 6 or the 9 would be good for blues-rocking stuff. The lows need to be tight enough for heavy, classic rock riffs. here's what I mean (you're hearing an Antiquity Firebird in the bridge. Kick-a$$ piece of gear, I should say):

Nice growly tone! I don't think a single coil size pickup can be made that will get the sound of a wide paf humbucker or mini humbucker. Maybe one could be made that will be as loud but it probably won't have the same "girth".

Why not rout your Strat for a Firebird Antiquity and get a new pickguard? It won't sound as fat as that pickup in a Les Paul but if that's the tone you're after that might be the only way to get it.

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

I tried that once, but the harmonic content was much different. Maybe mini's and Firebird's are a little different from humbuckers in that respect. I suppose someone could beef the mids a little more and it would work better. In the goldtop, its awesome.

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

The Hot Stack Plus is the Stack Plus take on the SSL-3 Hot, rather than a revamp of the old Hot Stack. Pretty different beast, cool in a very different way.

Custom Shop might even be able to do a Stack Plus version of the Quarter Pounder, if you really want minimal noise/maximum tone preservation (compared to the original single coil). Along with whatever other tweaks you wanted, of course.

Re: Strat bridge: Advice appreciated

Hot Stack Plus... SSL-3... is that the one that has a P-90 inflection to it? Or, was that the SSL-5? FWIW, to my ear the 7 has its own thing going on, maybe a little unique among all the brawny single coils out there.
