Strat Copies better then the originals

Looking for a new strat, want to know what companies make ones that you guys consider better then Fenders.

Ps. Totally cool if you think Fender makes the best, just want your opinions.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

idk what companies build the parts over there, but for 938 USD you can assemble a guitar that's head and shoulders better than anything fender ever produced, IMO.

$228 for the best neck you've ever laid hands on

170-180 for a matching body

Then, hardware

$60 for tuners (need some flathead screws though, the ones that come with those tuners strip quicker than Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies)
$138 for a (IMO overpriced) bridge

Then a pickguard, and pickups.

But all top end equipment and parts still comes out under $1 grand, but idk what shipping is to australia. I figure many of these companies would be willing to send you the parts without too much trouble.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

I' not enticed by parts-o-caster but that would probably be the best value, they do say you pay half for parts, half for labour.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

Music Man makes incredible guitars. A Silhouette Special may be right up your alley.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

Any parts guitar is going to need a fret level/setup and that's going to get pricey depending on your area. I know a level/crown on the SS frets on my Warmoth Tele neck cost $220 and it was virtually unplayable before that happened.

I'd look for a used EBMM, to be sure.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

A fret level will cost a lot in my area by the sounds of thing, local shops get killed by the man up in the big city. I'll for sure look into EBMM.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

warmoth. if you combine the shipping and stuff when you order, you can put together a custom shop quality axe for less than a grand aussie easily -and all the components will be exactly what you want right from the get go.
Welcome aboard...and what part of australia are you?

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

Parts builds can be great guitars and can also be great values however I don't know that you can get in and out for a grand w/o leaving something off or putting off set up work.

As far as "better" than a Strat, it really depends on what, to you makes a guitar "better".

When I play a lot of guitars that are "improved" versions of Strats and Tele's or even Les Pauls, SG's, etc I often find that while they gained some stuff...maybe it plays "better", feels "better, sounds "better", etc they lost something and more often than not they lost something too important to loose.

All this said it truly depends on what you want from a Strat but if I were Strat shopping right now I'd save a few hundo more and drop $1200-1400 on a used Eric Johnson Strat OR I'd get a Jimmie Vaughan and upgrade a few things, which to be honest is what IO did a few years ago!

However, if you want humbuckers, locking tremolo systems, etc my options are not great for you...

^ He's in Aus, so you're unlikely to get even a 2nd hand Am Std for less than $1000-$1200

+1 for Warmoth. Look in the Showcase. They've got some cheap finished bodies in solid colours. Also a solid maple neck is cheap....especially if you can spray some rattlecan clear gloss onto it yourself.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

For a traditional strat, I'd go with G&L.

If you want a "super strat" then look at Ibanez or Jackson.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

Thanks for all the suggestions guys

I'm in Perth metro Gibson175, how are you going with the fires at the moment?

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

A Tokai or Fernandes from late '70s/ early '80s. If you get them from Japan, you will usually get one in near-mint condition.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

Can you get Fender Japan in Australia? I have a couple of FJ pieces and they are seriously good guitars compared to (say 95% of) my Custom Shop Fenders and Suhrs.

I'm talking about the Japan market only guitars, no opinion on the ones that were sold in the US 15-20 years ago.

Several.
USA Hamer Daytona
USA Washburn Silverado
Surh
Anderson
Those come to mind first.

Re: Strat Copies better then the originals

Agreed with the MIJ Fender recommendation.... I don't know what they go for there, but they hit in around the $550 USD range here and are IMO phenomenal guitars.

I have two guitars with necks I bought separate from the bodies, and haven't had any work done on either - then again I play with higher action. One of them came from USACG so no surprise there, but the other one was made by Musikraft (I think, I forget) and that one works alright. If you play with a light strings and a light touch I can see how you'd need a more finely tuned setup though.
