Some Jap Squiers were made of basswood too. Basswood is a softer wood, it dings easily.
For sure, I think we have here a potential candidate for becoming a great axe. Before settling on a pickup combo, I'd put some strings and hear how it sounds. Then I'd decide which pickups.
